वैशम्पायन ने कहा — (आगे) किन्तु सन्धि में कोई अपमान नहीं है। हे राजन्, वासुदेव के उन वचनों को सुनकर सबने वैसा ही किया जैसा उन्होंने कहा। उनके रोकने पर अर्जुन द्वारका लौट आए और सुभद्रा के साथ उनका विवाह सम्पन्न हुआ। वृष्णिवंश के पुत्रों द्वारा सम्मानित होकर अर्जुन वहाँ यथेच्छ विहार करते हुए एक वर्ष द्वारका में रहे। वनवास के अन्तिम वर्ष उन्होंने पवित्र पुष्कर तीर्थ में व्यतीत किया। बारह वर्ष पूर्ण होने पर वे खाण्डवप्रस्थ लौट आए। उन्होंने पहले राजा के पास जाकर उनका अभिवादन किया, फिर ब्राह्मणों की श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजा की। अन्त में वे द्रौपदी के पास गए। द्रौपदी ने ईर्ष्यावश उनसे कहा — हे कुन्तीपुत्र, यहाँ क्यों रुके हो? जाओ, उस सात्वत-कुल की कन्या के पास जाओ! लकड़ी के गट्ठर पर दूसरी रस्सी बँधने से पहली ढीली पड़ ही जाती है! इस प्रकार कृष्णा ने बहुत विलाप किया। किन्तु धनञ्जय ने बार-बार उन्हें मनाया और क्षमा माँगी। और शीघ्र ही लौटकर जहाँ सुभद्रा लाल रेशमी वस्त्र धारण किए हुई थी, वहाँ अर्जुन ने उसे रानी के वेश में नहीं, अपितु एक साधारण गोपी के वस्त्रों में अन्तःपुर में भेजा। किन्तु जब वह महल में पहुँची, तो उस वेश में भी विख्यात सुभद्रा और भी अधिक सुन्दर दिखाई दी। बड़े और कुछ लाल आभा वाले नेत्रों वाली यशस्विनी भद्रा ने सर्वप्रथम पृथा को प्रणाम किया। कुन्ती ने अत्यन्त स्नेह से उस निर्दोष रूपवती कन्या के मस्तक को सूँघा और उसे अनन्त आशीर्वाद दिए। तत्पश्चात् वह पूर्ण चन्द्रमा के समान मुखवाली कन्या शीघ्रता से द्रौपदी के पास गई और उन्हें प्रणाम करते हुए बोली — "मैं आपकी दासी हूँ।" कृष्णा शीघ्र उठीं और माधव की बहन को स्नेहपूर्वक हृदय से लगाते हुए बोलीं — "तुम्हारे पति निर्वैर हों।" तब भद्रा ने प्रसन्न हृदय से द्रौपदी से कहा — "ऐसा ही हो।" हे जनमेजय, उस दिन से वे महान् योद्धा पाण्डव सुखपूर्वक रहने लगे और कुन्ती भी अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुईं।

Vaisampayana said, — (continued) There is no disgrace, however, in conciliation.' Hearing, O monarch, those words of V^sudeva, they did as he directed. Stopped by them, Arjuna returned to Dwaraka and was united in marriage with Subhadra. Worshipped by the sons of Vrishni's race, Arjuna, sporting there as he pleased, passed a whole year in Dwaraka. The last year of his exile the exalted one passed at the sacred region of Pushkara. After the twelve years were complete he came back to Khandavaprastha. He approached the king first and then wor- shipped the Brahmanas with respectful attention. At last the hero went unto Draupadi. Draupadi, from jealousy, spoke unto him, saying 'Why tarriest thou here, O son of Kunti ? Go where the daughter of the Satwata race is ! A second tie always relaxeth the first one upon a faggot ! And Krishna lamented much in this strain. But Dhananjaya pacified her repeatedly asked her forgiveness. And returning soon unto where Subhadra, attired in red silk, was staying Arjuna, sent her into the inner appartments dressed not as a queen but in the simple garb of a cowherd woman. But arrived at the palace, the renowned Subhadra looked handsomer in that dress. The celebrated Bhadra of large and slightly red eyes first worshipped Pritha. Kunti from excess of affection smelt the head of that girl of perfectly faultless features, and pronounc- ed infinite blessing upon her. Then that girl of face like the full moon hastily went unto Draupadi and worshipped her, saying,— 'I am thy maid !' Krishna rose hastily and embraced the sister of Madhava from affection, and said,— 'Let thy husband be without a foe ! Bhadra then, with a delighted heart, said unto Draupadi,— 'So be It !' From that time, O Janamejaya, those great warriors, the Pandavas, began to live happily, and Kunti also became very happy."
