धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि अर्जुन ने अपनी इच्छा से तुम सबका वध किया। सत्य तो यह है कि यदि अर्जुन शस्त्र उठा ले, तो स्वयं काल भी युद्ध में उससे बच नहीं सकता। पार्थ ने अकेले ही भद्रा का हरण किया, अकेले ही अग्नि को तृप्त किया। अकेले ही उसने सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी को जीता और समस्त राजाओं से कर ग्रहण किया। अकेले ही उसने अपने दिव्य धनुष से निवातकवचों का संहार किया। अकेले ही उसने व्याध के वेश में सामने आए महादेव से युद्ध किया। अकेले ही उसने भारतों की रक्षा की और अकेले ही भव को सन्तुष्ट किया। पृथ्वी के समस्त प्रचण्ड पराक्रमी राजा अकेले उसी के द्वारा परास्त किए गए। कुरुओं पर कोई दोष नहीं लगाया जा सकता। वरन् ऐसे योद्धा से युद्ध करने के लिए वे प्रशंसा के पात्र हैं। अब मुझे बताओ कि उन्होंने इसके पश्चात् क्या किया। हे सूत, यह भी बताओ कि इसके बाद दुर्योधन ने क्या किया। सञ्जय ने कहा — आहत और घायल होकर, रथों से गिराए जाकर, कवच-विहीन और शस्त्रहीन होकर, अपने वाहनों को मारा हुआ देखकर, शत्रुओं से पराजित वे अभिमानी कौरव करुण स्वर में विलाप करते और शोक से जलते हुए अपने शिविरों में लौट आए और परस्पर मन्त्रणा करने लगे। उस समय वे ऐसे दिखाई देते थे जैसे दूसरों के पैरों तले रौंदे गए, विष और दाँत से रहित सर्प। तब कर्ण ने क्रुद्ध सर्प की भाँति दीर्घ नि:श्वास लेते हुए, हाथ मलते हुए और तुम्हारे पुत्र की ओर दृष्टि डालते हुए कहा — अर्जुन सदा सावधान, दृढ़, कुशल और बुद्धिमान है। इसके अतिरिक्त, जब भी अवसर आता है, वासुदेव उसे उचित कर्तव्य का बोध कराते हैं। आज उसने अस्त्रों की उस अकस्मात् वर्षा से हमें छल लिया। किन्तु हे पृथ्वीपते, कल मैं उसके सभी मनोरथों को विफल कर दूँगा। कर्ण के इन वचनों को सुनकर दुर्योधन ने कहा — ऐसा ही हो — और तब उसने उन राजाश्रेष्ठों को विश्राम की अनुमति प्रदान की।

Kama's Hopes for Victory Dhritarashtra said, "It seems that Arjuna slew all of you at his will. Indeed, the Destroyer himself could not escape him in battle, if Arjuna took up arms against Him. Single-handed, Partha ravished Bhadra, and single-handed, he gratified Agni. Single-handed, he subjugated the whole Earth, and made all the kings pay tribute. Single-handed, with his celestial bow he slew the Nivatakavachas. Single-handed, he contented in battle with Mahadeva who stood before him in the guise of a hunter. Single-handed, he protected the Bharatas, and single-handed, he gratified Bhava. Single-handed, were vanquished by him all the kings of the Earth endued with fierce prowess. The Kurus cannot be blamed. On the other hand, they deserve praise (for their having fought with such a warrior). Tell me now what they did. Tell me also, O Suta, what Duryodhana did after that." Sanjaya said, "Struck and wounded and overthrown from their vehicles and divested of armour and deprived of weapons and their beasts slain, with plaintive voices and burning with grief and vanquished by their foes, the vain Kauravas, entering their tents once more took counsel of one another. They then looked like snakes deprived of fangs and posion, trod upon by others. Unto them, Kama, sighing like an angry snake, squeezing his hands, and eyeing thy son, said, 'Arjuna is always careful, firm, possessed of skill, and endued with intelligence. Again, when the time comes Vftsudeva awakes him (to what should be done). Today, by that sudden shower of weapons we were deceived by him. Tomorrow, however, O lord of Earth, I will frustrate all his purposes.' Thus addressed by Kama, Duryodhana said, 'So be It* — and then granted permission to those foremost of kings to retire.
