युधिष्ठिर ने कहा — हे महाबाहु वासुदेव, सौभ के स्वामी की मृत्यु का वृत्तान्त विस्तार से सुनाइए। आपके वर्णन से मेरी जिज्ञासा अभी शान्त नहीं हुई। वासुदेव ने कहा — हे महाबाहु राजन्, जब शाल्व को यह ज्ञात हुआ कि श्रुतश्रवा के पुत्र शिशुपाल को मैंने मार डाला है, तब हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, वह द्वारावती नगरी पर चढ़ आया। हे पाण्डुपुत्र, उस दुष्ट राजा ने अपनी सेना को व्यूह में स्थापित कर उस नगरी को चारों ओर से और ऊपर से भी घेर लिया। आकाश में स्थित होकर उसने नगरी पर आक्रमण आरम्भ किया। चारों दिशाओं से अस्त्र-शस्त्रों की घनघोर वर्षा के साथ वह संग्राम प्रारम्भ हुआ। हे भरतवृषभ, उस समय वह नगरी दुर्गविज्ञान के अनुसार सब प्रकार से सुदृढ़ रूप से सुरक्षित थी — ध्वजाओं, तोरणों, योद्धाओं, प्राचीरों, बुर्जों, यन्त्रों, सुरंग खोदने वाले सैनिकों, काँटेदार काष्ठ-अवरोधों से बन्द गलियों, प्रवेशद्वारों से युक्त भवनों और मीनारों से, जो सम्पूर्ण रूप से रसद और आक्रामक शस्त्रों से भरे थे। इसके अतिरिक्त वहाँ जलते हुए अंगारे और अग्नि फेंकने के यन्त्र थे, मृगचर्म के जलपात्र थे, शंख, नगाड़े और भेरियाँ थीं, भाले, काँटे, शतघ्नियाँ, हलधार, अग्निबाण, पाषाण-गोले, परशु और अन्य अनेक शस्त्र थे, लोहे की कीलों से जड़ी ढालें थीं, और गोले, गोलियाँ तथा उबलते द्रव फेंकने के यन्त्र भी थे। हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, नगरी की रक्षा अनेक रथों द्वारा भी होती थी, और गद, साम्ब, उद्धव तथा अन्य वीरों द्वारा भी, जो सभी कुलीन, रण-परीक्षित और किसी भी शत्रु का सामना करने में समर्थ थे। ये सभी वीर सुदृढ़ स्थानों पर अश्वारोहियों और ध्वजवाहकों के साथ मिलकर नगरी की रक्षा में तत्पर हो गए। उग्रसेन और उद्धव आदि ने प्रमाद न हो इसलिए नगरी में यह घोषणा करवा दी कि कोई भी मद्यपान न करे।

(Arjunabhigamana Parva continued) "Yudhishthira said, 'O illustrious Vasudeva of mighty arms, tell thou in detail of the death of the lord of Saubha. My curiosity hath not been appeased by thy narration.' " "Vasudeva said, *O mighty-armed king, hearing that the son of Srutasravas (Sisupala) had been slain by me, Salwa, O best of the Bharata race, came to the city of Dwaravati ! And, O son of Pandu, the wicked king, stationing his forces in array, besieged that city around and above. And stationing himself in the upper regions, the king began his fight with the city. And that encounter commenced with a thick shower of weapons from all sides. And, O bull of the Bharata race, the city at that time was well fortified on all sides, according to the science (of fortifications), with pennons, and arches, and combatants, and walls and turrets, and engines, and miners, and streets barricaded with spiked wood- works and towers and edifices with gate- ways well filled with provisions, and offensive weapons, and engines for hurling burning brands and fires, and vessels of deer-skins (for carrying water), and trumpets, tabors, and drums, lances and forks, and Sataghnis, and plough-shares, rockets, balls of stone and battle-axes and other weapons and shields embossed with iron, and engines for hurling balls and bullets and hot liquids ! And the city was also well-defended by numerous cars, and, O tiger among Kurus, by Gada and Shamva and Uddhava and others, and by warriors of prowess tried in battle, all well-born and capable of encountering any foe ! And these all placing themselv es on commanding posts, aided by cavalry and standard-bearers, began to defend the town. And Ugrasena and Uddhava and others, to prevent carelessness, proclaimed throughout the city that nobody should drink.
