उस समय भयंकर काँक, गिद्ध, सारस, बाज और कौए — जो भोजन की आशा में आगे बढ़ रहे थे — पार्थ के रथ के आगे-आगे चलने लगे और शत्रु-सेना के विनाश तथा कर्ण के वध का शुभ संकेत देने लगे। हे राजन्, युद्ध में अधिक वेग से बढ़ते हुए वे पक्षी हर्षपूर्वक अपनी-अपनी ध्वनियाँ करते जा रहे थे। जब पार्थ आगे बढ़ रहे थे, तब उनके शरीर पर विपुल स्वेद छा गया। अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को कैसे पूर्ण करेंगे — इस चिन्ता से उनका मन अत्यन्त व्याकुल हो उठा। तब मधु के वध करने वाले श्रीकृष्ण ने पार्थ को चिन्तामग्न देखकर गाण्डीव-धारी अर्जुन से ये वचन कहे।
