वैशम्पायन ने कहा — तब उस ब्राह्मण ने अर्जुन और सात्वत वंश के वासुदेव को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — "जो वीर इस समय खाण्डव वन के इतने निकट विराजमान हैं, वे दोनों इस पृथ्वी पर वीरों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। मैं एक ऐसा ब्राह्मण हूँ जो सदा अत्यधिक भोजन करता है। हे वृष्णिकुलनन्दन और हे पार्थ, मैं आप दोनों से यह याचना करता हूँ कि मुझे पर्याप्त भोजन देकर मेरी तृप्ति करें।" ब्राह्मण के इस प्रकार कहने पर कृष्ण और पाण्डुपुत्र ने उत्तर दिया — "हमें बताइए कि आप किस प्रकार का भोजन चाहते हैं, जिससे हम आपकी तृप्ति के लिए यत्न कर सकें।" उन वीरों के इस प्रकार पूछने पर उस तेजस्वी ब्राह्मण ने कहा — "मैं साधारण भोजन ग्रहण करने की इच्छा नहीं रखता। जानो कि मैं अग्नि हूँ। मुझे वह भोजन दो जो मेरे योग्य हो। यह खाण्डव वन सदा इन्द्र द्वारा रक्षित है। उस तेजस्वी देव की रक्षा के कारण मैं इसे कभी भस्म नहीं कर पाता। इस वन में तक्षक नामक नाग अपने परिजनों और अनुचरों सहित निवास करता है, जो इन्द्र का मित्र है। उसी के कारण वज्रधारी इन्द्र इस वन की रक्षा करते हैं। तक्षक के निमित्त अनेक अन्य प्राणी भी यहाँ सुरक्षित हैं। इस वन को भस्म करने की इच्छा से मैं बार-बार प्रयत्न करता हूँ, किन्तु इन्द्र के पराक्रम के कारण सफल नहीं हो पाता। जब भी मैं प्रज्वलित होता हूँ, वे मेघों से जल बरसाकर मुझे बुझा देते हैं। इसीलिए मैं खाण्डव वन को भस्म करने में असमर्थ रहता हूँ, यद्यपि मेरी यह प्रबल अभिलाषा है। अब मैं आप दोनों के पास आया हूँ, जो अस्त्र-शस्त्रों में निपुण हैं।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said,— "Then that Brahmana addressed Arjuna and Vasudeva of the Satwata race, saying, — 'Ye who are now staying so n«ar unto Khandava are the two foremost of heroes on earth ! I am a voracious Brahmana that always eateth much. O thou of the Vrishni race, and O Partha, I solicit you to gratify me by giving me suffi- cient food :' Thus addressed by the Brahmana, Krishna and the son of Pandu answered him, saying, — 'O tell us what kind of food will gratify thee, so that we may endeavour to give It thee !' The illustri- ous Brahmana, thus replied to, said unto those heroes who were en- quiring after the kind of food he sought, — 'I do not desire to eat ordi- nary food. Know that I am Agni \ Give me that food which suiteth me. This forest of Khandava is always protected by Indra. And as It is protected by the illustrious one, I always fail to consume It. In that for- est dwelleth, with his followers and family, a Naga> called Takshaka, who is the friend of Indra. It is for him that the wielder of the thunder- bolt protecteth this forest. Many other creatures also are thus pro- tected here for the sake of Takshaka. Desiring to consume the forest I succeed not in my attempts in consequence of Indra's prowess. Beholding me blazing forth, he always poureth upon me water from the clouds. Therefore, I succeed not in consuming the forest of Khan- dava, although I desire very much to do so. I have now come to you — you who are both skilled in weapons !
