अगले प्रभात, दुर्योधन ने द्रोण से ये वचन कहे — शत्रु की समृद्धि देखकर उसके मन में जो खीझ, क्रोध और गहरी उदासी भर आई थी, उसी के वशीभूत होकर। वाणी में कुशल और शत्रु की सफलता से क्रोध से भरा हुआ वह राजा, समस्त सेना के सम्मुख बोला — "हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ, इसमें कोई सन्देह नहीं कि आपने हमें उन लोगों में गिन लिया है जिन्हें आप स्वयं नष्ट करना चाहते हैं। आज युधिष्ठिर आपकी पहुँच के भीतर था, फिर भी आपने उसे नहीं पकड़ा। जिस शत्रु को आप युद्ध में पकड़ना चाहें, वह एक बार आपकी दृष्टि में आ जाए तो भाग नहीं सकता — चाहे पाण्डव उसकी रक्षा करें, चाहे स्वयं देवता उसके साथ हों। आपने प्रसन्न होकर मुझे वरदान दिया था, किन्तु अब आप उसके अनुसार नहीं चल रहे। जो महानुभाव होते हैं, वे अपने भक्तों की आशाओं को कभी मिथ्या नहीं करते।" दुर्योधन के इन वचनों को सुनकर भारद्वाज-पुत्र को अत्यन्त लज्जा का अनुभव हुआ। उन्होंने राजा को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — "तुम्हें मुझे ऐसा नहीं समझना चाहिए। जो तुम्हें प्रिय हो, उसे सिद्ध करने का मैं सदा प्रयत्न करता हूँ। किरीटधारी अर्जुन जिस सेना की रक्षा करता हो, उसे देवता, असुर, गन्धर्व, यक्ष, नाग और राक्षसों सहित तीनों लोक भी पराजित नहीं कर सकते। जहाँ ब्रह्माण्ड के सृष्टिकर्ता गोविन्द हों और जहाँ अर्जुन सेनापति हो, वहाँ हे स्वामी, त्रिनेत्र महादेव के अतिरिक्त किसका सामर्थ्य टिक सकता है? हे तात, आज मैं तुमसे सत्य कहता हूँ, इसमें अन्यथा नहीं होगा। आज मैं पाण्डवों के एक महान रथी को, उनके अग्रणी वीरों में से एक को, मार गिराऊँगा। आज मैं ऐसी व्यूह-रचना भी करूँगा जिसे स्वयं देवता भी भेद न सकें। किन्तु हे राजन्, तुम किसी भी उपाय से अर्जुन को रणक्षेत्र से दूर कर दो।"
English Summary
"Next morning, Duryodhana said unto Drona, these words, from petulance and wrath, and in great cheerlessness of heart at the sight of the prosperity of their foe. Skilled in speech, and filled with rage at the success of the foe, the king said these words in the hearing of all the troops, 'O foremost of regenerate ones, without doubt thou hast set us down for men who should be destroyed by thee. Thou didst not seize Yudhishthira today even though thou hadst got him within thy reach. That foe whom thou wouldst seize in battle is incapable of escaping thee if once thou gettest him within sight, even if he be pro- tected by the Pandavas, aided by the very gods^ Gratified, thou gavest me a boon ; now, however, thou dost not act according to It. They that are noble (like thee), never falsify the hopes of one devoted to them.' Thus addressed by Duryodhana, Bharadwaja's son felt greatly ashamed. Addressing the king, he said, 'It behoveth thee not to take me to be such. I always endeavour to achieve what is agreeable to thee. The three worlds with the gods, the Asuras, the Gandharvas. the Yakshas, the Nagas, and the Rakshasas, cannot defeat the force that is protected by the diadem-decked (Arjuna). There where Govinda, the Creator of the universe is, and there where Arjuna is the commander, whose might can avail, save three-eyed Mahadeva's, O lord ? O sire, I tell thee truly today and It will not be otherwise. Today, I will slay a mighty car-warrior, one of the foremost heroes of the Pandavas. Today I will also form an array that is impenetrable by the very gods. Do, however, O king, by some means take Arjuna away from the field.
