कण्व ने कहा — (आगे) रूप और शारीरिक सौष्ठव में वह अपनी जाति की अन्य स्त्रियों से श्रेष्ठ थी। जब मतलि को ज्ञात हुआ कि उसके कन्यादान का समय आ गया है, तब वह और उसकी पत्नी अत्यन्त चिन्तित हो उठे और हे राजन्, सोचने लगे कि अब क्या करना चाहिए। मतलि ने मन ही मन विचार किया — अहो, जो कुल सदाचारी, उच्चवंशीय, यशस्वी और विनम्र होते हैं, उनमें कन्या का जन्म सदा ही कष्टकारी होता है। कुलीन परिवारों में जन्मी कन्याएँ सदा तीन कुलों की मर्यादा को संकट में डालती हैं — अपने मातृकुल को, अपने पितृकुल को और उस कुल को जिसमें वे विवाह द्वारा प्रवेश करती हैं। मैंने देवलोक और मनुष्यलोक दोनों में दृष्टि दौड़ाई, किन्तु कोई योग्य वर मुझे नहीं मिला।
