भरतवंश के श्रेष्ठ पुरुष, भीष्म के इस प्रकार कहने पर वे सभी राजा अपने उत्तम रथों पर सुशोभित होते हुए अपनी-अपनी सेना के अग्रभाग की ओर चले गए। किन्तु विकर्तन-पुत्र कर्ण अपने मित्रों और सम्बन्धियों सहित भीष्म के कारण युद्ध में अपने शस्त्र रख दिए। हे भरतवंश के श्रेष्ठ, कर्ण के बिना ही तुम्हारे पुत्र और तुम्हारी ओर के समस्त राजा दसों दिशाओं को सिंहनाद से गुञ्जायमान करते हुए आगे बढ़े। हे राजन्, उनकी सेनाएँ श्वेत छत्रों, पताकाओं, ध्वजाओं, हाथियों, घोड़ों, रथों और पैदल सैनिकों से अत्यन्त शोभायमान हो रही थीं। नगाड़ों, ढोलों और झाँझों की ध्वनि तथा रथों के पहियों की गड़गड़ाहट से पृथ्वी काँप उठी। सोने के कंगन और बाजूबन्द धारण किए हुए तथा सुवर्ण-विभूषित धनुष लिए वे महारथी योद्धा अग्निमय पर्वतों के समान प्रकाशमान दिखाई दे रहे थे। पाँच तारों से सुसज्जित अपने विशाल ताल-ध्वज के साथ कुरु-सेना के सेनापति भीष्म स्वयं तेजस्वी सूर्य के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे। हे भरतवंश के श्रेष्ठ, राजकुल में उत्पन्न वे महान् धनुर्धर वीर यह अनुच्छेद मूल संस्कृत श्लोक का अनुवाद नहीं है, अपितु एक अंग्रेज़ी टिप्पणी (footnote) है जो "चमूपति" और "चमूपरि" — इन दो पाठान्तरों की व्याख्या करती है। इसमें अनुवाद योग्य कोई श्लोक या कथा-वचन नहीं है।
English Summary
Thus addressed, O bull of Bharata's race, by Bhishma, the kings, looking beautiful in their excellent cars, proceeded to the heads of their respective divisions. Only Vikartana's son Kama, with his friends and relatives, O bull of Bharata's race, laid aside his weapons in battle for the sake of Bhishma. Without Kama then, thy sons and all the kings on thy side proceeded, making the ten points of the horizon resound with their leonine roars. And their divisions shone brightly, O king, with white umbrellas, banners, standards, elephants, steeds, cars, and foot-soldiers. And the Earth was agitated with the sounds of drums and tabors and cymbals, and the clatter of car-wheels. And the mighty car-warriors, decked with their bracelets and armlets of gold and with their bows (variegated with gold), looked resplendent like hills of fire. And with his large palmyra-standard decked with five stars, Bhishma,' the generalissimo of the Kuru army,4 looked like the resplendent Sun himself.
