जो मनुष्य इस पृथ्वी पर भूत, वर्तमान और भविष्य का चिन्तन करते हैं, जो धर्म, अर्थ और काम — इन तीनों के प्रति समर्पित रहते हैं, जो कामना के वशीभूत होकर कार्य करते हैं और प्रत्येक इच्छा की पूर्ति पर उल्लसित होते हैं — वे रजोगुण से आवृत कहे जाते हैं। ऐसे मनुष्यों की गति अधोमुखी होती है। वे बार-बार इस संसार में जन्म लेते हैं और भोग में लीन रहते हैं। वे इस लोक की वस्तुओं की भी लालसा रखते हैं और परलोक के फलों की भी अभिलाषा करते हैं। वे दान देते हैं, दान ग्रहण करते हैं, पितरों को श्राद्ध अर्पित करते हैं और यज्ञाग्नि में आहुति डालते हैं। इस प्रकार रजोगुण के विविध लक्षण तुम्हें बताए गए हैं और उससे उत्पन्न होने वाले आचरण का भी यथावत् वर्णन किया गया है। जो मनुष्य इन गुणों को सदा भली-भाँति जानता है, वह रजोगुण से सम्बन्धित इन सभी गुणों से सदा मुक्त होने में समर्थ होता है।
English Summary
Those men on Earth who meditate on the past, present, and the future, who are devoted to the aggregate of three, viz., Religion, Wealth, and Pleasure, who acting from impulse of desire, exult on attaining to affluence in respect of every desire, are said to be enveloped by Passion. These men have downward courses* Repeatedly reborn in this world, they give them- selves up to pleasure. They covet what belongs to this world as also all those fruits that belong to the world hereafter. They make gifts, accept gifts, offer oblations to the Pitris, and pour libations on the sacrificial fire. The qualities of Passion have (thus) been declared to you in their variety. The course of conduct also to which It leads has been properly described to you. The man who always understands these qualities, succeeds in always freeing himself from all of them which appertain to Passion.' '
