तब अर्जुन ने अपनी हस्तलाघव की कुशलता दिखाते हुए, तेरी सेना के सम्मुख ही, कर्ण को बाणों से आच्छादित कर दिया। कर्ण ने भी, जो शत्रु-सेनाओं का संहारक था, अर्जुन के इस पराक्रम का प्रतिकार करने की इच्छा से, उसे सहस्रों बाणों से ढक दिया। दो वृषभों की भाँति एक-दूसरे पर गर्जना करते हुए, वे दोनों नरश्रेष्ठ, वे महाबली रथी, सीधे बाणों के मेघों से आकाश को आच्छन्न कर गए। एक-दूसरे के बाण-समूहों से अदृश्य होते हुए भी वे परस्पर प्रहार करते रहे। वे एक-दूसरे पर गर्जते रहे और वाक्-बाणों से बींधते रहे — "मैं पार्थ हूँ, ठहरो!" और "मैं कर्ण हूँ, ठहरो!" हे फाल्गुन! सच ही, उन दोनों वीरों ने अपूर्व स्फूर्ति और कौशल का प्रदर्शन करते हुए अद्भुत युद्ध किया। उनका वह दृश्य ऐसा था कि अन्य योद्धा केवल साक्षी बनकर रह गए। सिद्धों, चारणों और पन्नगों की प्रशंसा के बीच, हे राजन्, वे दोनों एक-दूसरे का वध करने की अभिलाषा से युद्ध करते रहे। तब, हे राजन्, दुर्योधन ने तेरे योद्धाओं को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — "राधा के पुत्र की सावधानी से रक्षा करो! अर्जुन का वध किए बिना वह युद्ध से विरत नहीं होगा। वृष ने मुझसे यही कहा था।" इसी बीच, हे नरेश, कर्ण के पराक्रम को देखकर श्वेताश्व अर्जुन ने कानों तक खींची प्रत्यञ्चा से छोड़े चार बाणों द्वारा कर्ण के चारों अश्वों को यमलोक पहुँचा दिया। फिर एक चौड़े फलवाले बाण से कर्ण के सारथि को रथ के आसन से गिरा दिया। और कर्ण को भी बाणों से आच्छादित कर दिया।
English Summary
Then Arjuna, displaying his lightness of hands, covered Kama, in that battle, with his arrows, in the very sight of all thy troops. Kama also, that slayer of hosts, desirous of counteracting Arjuna's feat, covered Arjuna with several thousands of arrows. Roaring at each other like two bulls, those lions among men, those might£ car- warriors, shrouded the welkin with clouds of straight shafts. Each rendered invisible by the other's arrowy showers, they continued to strike each other. And they roared at each other and pierced each other with their wordy darts, saying, 'I am Partha, luait* — or, 'I am Kama, wait', 0 Phalguna ! Indeed these two heroes fought with each other wonderfully, displaying great activity and skill. And the sight they presented was such that other warriors became witnesses of that battle. And applauded by Siddhas, Charanas and Pannagas, they fought with each other, O king, each desirous of slaying the other. Then Duryodhana, O king, addressing thy warriors, said, 'Carefully protect the son of Radha ! Without slaying Arjuna he would not abstain from battle. Even this is what Vrisha told me.' Meanwhile, O monarch, beholding the prowess of Kama, Arjuna, of white steeds, with four shafts shot from the bow- string drawn to the ear, despatched the four steeds of Kama to Yama's domain.
