सञ्जय ने कहा — (आगे) उस भीषण संग्राम में शत्रु-रथियों द्वारा रथ और प्राण दोनों से वंचित किए गए रथी, जिनके हाथों से शस्त्र छूट चुके थे, और वीर शत्रुओं द्वारा मारे गए पैदल सैनिकों के बड़े-बड़े दल — ये सब सहस्रों की संख्या में धरती पर गिर पड़े। युद्ध के मद में उन्मत्त वीर योद्धाओं के कटे हुए शीश, जिन पर विशाल और विस्तृत ताम्रवर्णी नेत्र सुशोभित थे और जिनके मुख कमल तथा चन्द्रमा के समान सुन्दर थे — उनसे पृथ्वी आच्छादित हो गई। आकाश में और पृथ्वी की सतह पर समान रूप से गान और संगीत के स्वर सुनाई दे रहे थे। अपने दिव्य विमानों पर सवार अप्सराओं के विशाल दल पृथ्वी पर वीर शत्रुओं द्वारा सैकड़ों और सहस्रों की संख्या में मारे गए नवागत वीरों का निरन्तर स्वागत कर रहे थे, और उन्हें दिव्य विमानों पर आरूढ़ कराकर इन्द्रलोक की ओर ले जा रहे थे। अपनी आँखों से ये अद्भुत दृश्य देखकर और स्वर्ग जाने की अभिलाषा से प्रेरित होकर वीर योद्धा प्रसन्न चित्त से शीघ्रता पूर्वक एक-दूसरे का वध करने लगे। उस युद्ध में रथी रथियों से, पैदल सैनिक पैदल सैनिकों से, हाथी हाथियों से और घोड़े घोड़ों से सुन्दर रीति से लड़ रहे थे। वह संग्राम हाथियों और।
English Summary
Sanjaya said, — (continued) Car-warriors with weapons loosened from their grasp, and deprived by (hostile) car- warriors of cars and life, and large bands of foot-soldiers, slain by hostile heroes in that dreadful clash, fell down in thousands. The Earth became covered with the heads of heroic com- batants intoxicated with battle, heads that were adorned with large and expansive eyes of coppery hue and faces as beautiful as the lotus or the moon. And people heard noises as loud in the sky as on the surface of the Earth, in consequence of the sound of music and song proceeding from large bands of Apsaras on their celestial cars, with which those bands of heavenly choristers continually greeted the newly arrived heroes slain in hundreds and thousands by brave enemies on Earth, and with which, placing them on celestial cars, they repaired on those vehicles (towards the region of Indra). Witnessing with their own eyes those wonderful sights, and actuated by the desire of going to heaven, heroes, with cheerful hearts, speedily slew one another.
