महारथी अर्जुन, जो विजयियों में अग्रगण्य थे, अपने अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित बाणों से तुम्हारी सेना को धड़-विहीन शवों से भर दिया। हे राजन्, इस प्रकार चतुरंगिणी सेना में पूर्ण अव्यवस्था उत्पन्न करके कुन्ती के पुत्र जयद्रथ की ओर बढ़े। उन्होंने द्रोण-पुत्र को पचास बाणों से और वृषसेन को तीन बाणों से बेधा। कुन्ती के पुत्र ने कृपाचार्य को नौ बाणों से मृदुता से आहत किया, शल्य को सोलह बाणों से, और कर्ण को बत्तीस बाणों से बेधा। तत्पश्चात् सिन्धु-नरेश को चौंसठ बाणों से बेधकर उन्होंने सिंहनाद किया। किन्तु गाण्डीव-धारी के बाणों से बिंधे सिन्धु-नरेश क्रोध से भर उठे और उसे सहन न कर सके, जैसे अंकुश से बिंधा हाथी असह्य पीड़ा से तिलमिला उठता है। अपने ध्वज पर वराह-चिह्न धारण किए वे शीघ्र ही फाल्गुन के रथ की ओर दौड़े और धनुष को पूरी तरह खींचकर अनेक सीधे बाण छोड़े — जो लोहार के हाथों से भली-भाँति पालिश किए हुए थे, गृध्र-पंखों से युक्त थे, और विषधर क्रुद्ध सर्पों के समान थे। तब उन्होंने गोविन्द को तीन बाणों से बेधकर अर्जुन पर भी प्रहार किया।

The mighty car- warrior Arjuna, that foremost of victorious persons, with his shafts blazing as fire made thy army teem with headless trunks. ! Indeed, O king, thus creating a perfect confusion in thy host consisting of four kinds of forces, the son of Kunti proceeded towards Jayadratha. And he pierced the son of Drona with fifty shafts and Vrishasena with three. And the son of Kunti mildly struck Kripa with nine arrows, and he struck Salya with sixteen arrows and Kama with two and thirty. And piercing the ruler of the Sindhus then with four and sixty arrows, he uttered a leonine shout. The ruler of the Sindhus, however, thus pierced by the wielder of Gandiva with his arrows, became filled with rage and unable to brook It, like an elephant when pierced with the hook. Bearing the device of the boar on his banner, he quickly sped towards Phalguna's car many straight shafts equipped with vulturine feathers, resembling angry snakes of virulent poison, well-polished by the hands of the smith, and shot from his bow drawn to the fullest stretch.
