नारद ने कहा — हे सारथे, तुमने वरुण को उनके पुत्रों और पौत्रों से घिरे हुए देखा। अब जलों के स्वामी के इस राज्य को देखो। यह चारों ओर से मनोरम और धन-सम्पदा से परिपूर्ण है। समुद्र के स्वामी वरुण के पुत्र महान् बुद्धिमान हैं और अपने आचरण, स्वभाव तथा पवित्रता के लिए अत्यन्त विख्यात हैं। कमल के पत्तों जैसे नेत्रों वाले यह पुष्कर वरुण के अत्यन्त प्रिय पुत्र हैं — महान् सौन्दर्य से सम्पन्न और दर्शनीय। इन्हें सोम की पुत्री ने अपने पति के रूप में वरण किया है। सोम की वह पुत्री, जो सौन्दर्य में साक्षात् श्री के समान है, ज्योत्स्नाकाली के नाम से जानी जाती है। कहा जाता है कि उसने एक बार पहले अदिति के पुत्रों में ज्येष्ठ और श्रेष्ठ को अपना स्वामी चुना था। हे देवराज के सखे, अब उस आवास को देखो जो सम्पूर्णतः स्वर्ण से निर्मित है और वारुणी मदिरा से भरा हुआ है। इसी मदिरा को प्राप्त करके देवताओं ने अपना देवत्व अर्जित किया था। ये जो विविध प्रकार के दीप्तिमान अस्त्र तुम देख रहे हो, हे मातलि, ये उन दैत्यों के थे जो अपनी सत्ता से वञ्चित हो चुके हैं। ये अस्त्र कभी क्षीण नहीं होते और शत्रु पर छोड़े जाने पर सदा उसी हाथ में लौट आते हैं जिसने इन्हें फेंका हो। युद्ध में देवताओं द्वारा लूट के रूप में प्राप्त इन अस्त्रों को शत्रुओं के विरुद्ध प्रयोग करने के लिए अत्यन्त मानसिक शक्ति की आवश्यकता होती है। यहाँ पूर्वकाल में अनेक राक्षस और दैत्य जातियाँ निवास करती थीं जो अनेक प्रकार के दिव्यास्त्रों से सम्पन्न थीं, किन्तु देवताओं ने उन सबको परास्त कर दिया। देखो।
English Summary
"And Narada said, — Thou hast, O charioteer, seen Varuna surround- ed by his sons and grandsons. Behold the dominions of the Lord of the waters. It is delightful all round, and full of riches. The son, endued with great wisdom, of Varuna, the Lord of the Ocean, is even much distinguished for his conduct and disposition and for his holiness. Possessed of eyes like lotus leaves, this Pushkara is, indeed, Varuna's much-loved son, endued with great beauty and delightful to behold. He has been chosen by Soma's daughter as her husband. That daughter of Soma, equal in beauty unto a second Sree, is known by the name of Jyotsnakali. Indeed, It is said, that she had once before chosen the eldest and foremost of Aditi's son as her lord. Behold now, O companion of the Lord of the celestials, that abodi, made entirely of gold, and full of the wine called Varani. Indeed, having obtained that wine, the gods acquired their godheads. These blazing weapons also of every kind that thou seest, belonged, O Matali, to the Daityas who have been deprived of their sovereignty. These weapons are incapable of deterioration, and when hurled at the foe always return into the hand that hurleth them. Obtained by the gods as the booty of war, they require consider- able mental energy to be used again t foes. Here dwelt in days of yore many tribes of Rakshasas and Daityas, possessed of many kinds of celestial weapons, but they were all vanquished by the gods. Behold.fi 313 MAHABHABATA
