जब सेना शक्तिहीन होकर इस प्रकार तीव्र गति से भाग रही थी, तब द्रोण के पुत्र अश्वत्थामा — जैसे कोई विशाल मगर धारा के विपरीत चला आए — अकेले ही शत्रुओं की ओर बढ़े। शिखण्डी और प्रभद्रकों के नेतृत्व में पाञ्चालों, चेदियों और कैकेयों सहित अनेक योद्धाओं के साथ उनका घोर युद्ध हुआ। पाण्डव सेना के उन अनेक वीरों का संहार करके, जो सहज में परास्त होने वाले नहीं थे, और बड़ी कठिनाई से उस युद्ध के भँवर से निकलकर, उस मतवाले हाथी की-सी चाल वाले महावीर ने देखा कि कौरव सेना पलायन के संकल्प के साथ भाग रही है। तब द्रोणपुत्र दुर्योधन की ओर बढ़े और कुरुराज के समीप आकर बोले — हे भारत, यह सेना भयभीत होकर क्यों भाग रही है? हे नरेश, इस प्रकार भागते हुए भी तुम इन्हें युद्ध में क्यों नहीं रोकते? हे राजन्, तुम भी आज अपनी सामान्य स्थिति में नहीं दिखते। हे नरेश, उस रथियों में सिंह के वध के पश्चात् तुम्हारी सेना की यह दशा हुई है। हे कौरव, हे राजन्, कर्ण के नेतृत्व में भी ये सब योद्धा रणभूमि पर नहीं ठहर रहे। इससे पहले किसी युद्ध में सेना इस प्रकार नहीं भागी। हे भारत, क्या तुम्हारी सेना पर कोई विपत्ति आ पड़ी है? उस अवसर पर द्रोणपुत्र के ये वचन सुनकर राजाओं में वृषभ दुर्योधन यह कटु समाचार देने में स्वयं को असमर्थ पाने लगा। तुम्हारा पुत्र उस क्षण शोक के महासागर में डूबती नाव की भाँति डूबता प्रतीत हो रहा था। रथ पर द्रोणपुत्र को देखकर राजा की आँखें अश्रुओं से भर आईं। हे नरेश, लज्जा से अभिभूत होकर राजा ने तब शारद्वत के पुत्र से कहा — हे कल्याणमय, तुम ही इनसे पहले बताओ कि सेना इस प्रकार क्यों भाग रही है। तब हे राजन्, शारद्वत के पुत्र ने बारम्बार गहरी पीड़ा अनुभव करते हुए द्रोणपुत्र को बताया कि उनके पिता किस प्रकार वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए।
English Summary
"While the troops, deprived of energy, were thus flying away with speed, only Drona's Ron, Aswattharnan, like a huge alligator coming up against the current of a stream, rushed against his foes. A fierce battle took place between him and many warriors headed by Sikhandin and the Prabhadrakas, the Fanchalas, the Chedis, and the Kaikeyas. Slaying many warriors of the Pandava army that were incapable of being defeated with ease, and escaping with difficulty from the press of battle, that hero, possessed of the tread of an infuriated elephant, saw the (Kaurava) host running away, resolved on flight. Proceeding towards Duryodhana, Drona's son, approaching the Kuru king, said, 'Why, O Bharata, are the troops flying away as if in foar ? Although flying away, thus, 0 monarch, v, hy dost thou not yet rally them in battle ? Thyself, too, O king, dost not seem to be in thy usual frame of mind. Upon the slaughter of that lion among car-warriors, 0 monarch, hath thy force fallen into this plight. 0 Kaurava, 0 king, all these that are headed (even) by Kama, wait not on the field. In no battle fought before did the army fly away thus. Hath any evil befallen thy troops, 0 Bharata ?' Hearing these words of Drona's son on that occasion, Duryodhana, that bull among kings, felt himself unable to impart the bitter intelligence. Indeed, thy son seemed to sink into an ocean of grief, like a foundered boat. Beholding Drona's son on bis car, the king became bathed in tears. Suffused with shame, 0 monarch, the king then addressed Saradwat's son, saying, 'Blessed be thou, say thou, before otherp, why the army is thus flying away.' Then Saradwat's son, 0 king, repeatedly feeling great anguish, told Drona's son how his sire had been slain.'
