मेरा सारा समय इसी चिन्तन में बीता कि मैं युद्ध में कर्ण का वध कैसे करूँगा। हे कुन्तीपुत्र, जागते हुए हो या सोते हुए, मैं सदा कर्ण को ही देखता रहता था। जहाँ भी रहता, यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् मुझे कर्णमय प्रतीत होता था। कर्ण के भय से प्रेरित होकर मैं जहाँ भी जाता, हे धनञ्जय, वहीं कर्ण को अपने सामने खड़ा पाता था। उस वीर ने, जो कभी युद्ध से पीठ नहीं फेरता था, मेरे रथ और घोड़ों सहित मुझे परास्त करके भी जीवित छोड़ दिया था। अब मुझे इस जीवन से और राज्य से भी क्या प्रयोजन, जब कि युद्ध के उस आभूषण कर्ण ने आज मुझे धिक्कारा? भीष्म, कृप और द्रोण से युद्ध में जो कभी न हुआ, वह आज उस सूतपुत्र महारथी के हाथों मुझे सहना पड़ा। इसीलिए, हे कुन्तीपुत्र, मैं आज तुमसे तुम्हारा कुशल-मङ्गल पूछ रहा हूँ। मुझे विस्तार से बताओ कि आज तुमने कर्ण का वध कैसे किया। युद्ध में कर्ण साक्षात् शक्र के समान था, पराक्रम में यम के तुल्य था, और अस्त्र-विद्या में परशुराम के समान था। फिर उसका वध कैसे हुआ? वह समस्त युद्ध-कलाओं में निपुण महारथी माना जाता था, समस्त धनुर्धरों में अग्रणी और सब पुरुषों में अद्वितीय था। हे राजकुमार, राधापुत्र की धृतराष्ट्र और उनके पुत्र सदा तुम्हारे ही कारण पूजा करते थे। फिर वह तुम्हारे हाथों कैसे मारा गया?
English Summary
The whole of my time had passed in the thought as to how I would accomplish the destruction of Kama in battle ! Awake or asleep, O son of Kunti, I always beheld Kama (with my mind's eye). Wherever I was, the universe appeared to me to be full of Kama ! Inspired with the fear of Kama, wherever I used to go, O Dhananjaya, thither I beheld Kama standing before my eyes ! Vanquished, in battle, with my steeds and car, by that hero who never retreated from battle, alive I was let off by him ! What use have I of life or of kingdom either, since Kama, that ornament of battle, to-day cried fie on me ? That which I had never before met with at the hands of Bhishma or Kripa or Drona in battle, that I met with today at the hands of the Suta's son, that mighty car- warrior ! It is for this, O son of Kunti, that I ask thee today about thy welfare ! Tell me in detail how thou hast slain Kama today ! In battle Kama was equal unto Sakra himself. In prowess he was equal unto Yama. In weapons he was equal unto Rama. How then hath he been slain ? He was regarded as a mighty car- warrior, conversant with all modes of warfare. He was the foremost of all bowmen, and the one man amongst all men ! O prince, the son of Radha was always worshipped by Dhritarashtra and his son, for thy sake !
