वासुदेव ने कहा — हे नरश्रेष्ठ, तुम्हारी मुझमें अत्यन्त भक्ति है, इसीलिए, हे राजकुमार, मैंने तुम्हें अपना दिव्य स्वरूप दर्शाया है। हे राजश्रेष्ठ, जो मेरा भक्त नहीं है, जो भक्त होते हुए भी निष्कपट नहीं है, और जिसने अपनी आत्मा को वश में नहीं किया है — ऐसे किसी को भी मैं अपना यह स्वरूप नहीं दिखाता। तुम मेरे भक्त हो और सदा धर्म का पालन करते हो। तुम्हारा हृदय निर्मल है, तुम सदा संयमी हो और सदैव तप तथा दान में तत्पर रहते हो। हे भीष्म, तुम अपने तप के बल से ही मुझे देखने में समर्थ हो। हे राजन्, वे लोक तुम्हारी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं जहाँ से लौटना नहीं होता। हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, तुम्हारे जीवन के अभी छप्पन दिन शेष हैं। इस शरीर को त्यागकर, हे भीष्म, तुम अपने कर्मों का शुभ फल प्राप्त करोगे। देखो, वे देवता और वसुगण, जो अग्नि के समान दीप्तिमान रूप धारण किए हुए हैं, अपने रथों पर आरूढ़ होकर अदृश्य रूप से उत्तरायण के क्षण तक तुम्हारी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं। काल के अधीन, जब दिव्य सूर्य उत्तरायण की ओर मुड़ेंगे, तब हे नरश्रेष्ठ, तुम उन लोकों को प्रस्थान करोगे जहाँ से कोई भी ज्ञानी पुरुष इस पृथ्वी पर पुनः नहीं लौटता। हे भीष्म, जब तुम इस लोक को छोड़कर उस लोक में जाओगे, तब हे वीर, तुम्हारे साथ समस्त ज्ञान भी विदा हो जाएगा। इसीलिए ये सभी जन यहाँ एकत्र होकर धर्म और नीति के उपदेश सुनने के लिए तुम्हारे पास आए हैं। अतः तुम सत्य और हितकर वचन कहो।

"Vasudeva said, — 'Since, 0 bull among men, thy devotion to me is very great, for this, O prince, I have displayed my celestial form to thee ! 1 do not, O foremost of kings, display myself unto one that is not devoted te me, or unto a devotee that is not sincere, or unto one, O Bharata, that is not of restrained soul. Thou art devoted to me and art always obser- vant of righteousness. Of a pure heart, thou art always self-restrained and ever observant of penances and gifts. Through thy own penances, 0 Bhishma, thou art competent to behold me. Those regions, O king, are ready for thee whence there is no return 1* Six and fifty days, 0 foremost one of Kuru's race, still remain for thee to live ! Casting off thy body, thou shalt then, 0 Bhishma, obtain the blessed reward of thy acts I Behold, those deities and the Vasus, all endued with forms of fiery splen- dour, riding on their cars, are waiting for thee invisibly till the moment of the sun's entering on northerly course I Subject to universal time, when the divine Surya turns to his northerly. course, thou, 0 foremost of men, shalt go to those regions whence no man of knowledge ever returns to this Earth ! When thou, O Bhishma, wilt leave this world for that, all Knowledge, O hero, will expire with tbee !
