कृप और हृदिक-पुत्र के धनुष काटकर भीम ने उन दोनों को भी पीड़ित करना आरम्भ किया। दुःशासन को तीन लोहे के बाणों से और शकुनि को छः बाणों से बेधकर उसने उलूक और उसके भाई पतत्रि — दोनों को रथहीन कर दिया। तत्पश्चात् सुषेण को सम्बोधित करते हुए भीम ने कहा — "तू मारा गया" — और एक बाण उठाया। किन्तु कर्ण ने उस बाण को काट दिया और भीम को तीन शरों से आहत किया। तब भीम ने एक और सीधा, अत्यन्त वेगवान बाण उठाकर सुषेण पर छोड़ा, परन्तु वृष ने उस बाण को भी काट दिया। तत्पश्चात् कर्ण ने अपने पुत्र की रक्षा की इच्छा से और क्रूर भीमसेन का अन्त करने के संकल्प से उसे तिहत्तर भयंकर बाणों से बेध दिया। तब सुषेण ने एक उत्तम और महाबली धनुष उठाकर नकुल को भुजाओं और वक्षस्थल में पाँच बाणों से बेधा। नकुल ने भी अपने प्रतिद्वन्द्वी को बीस दृढ़ और महाबली शरों से बेधकर उच्च सिंहनाद किया, जिससे कर्ण के मन में भय उत्पन्न हुआ। किन्तु हे राजन्, महारथी सुषेण ने नकुल को दस बाणों से बेधकर क्षुरप्र बाण से उसका धनुष शीघ्र ही काट दिया। तब क्रोध से विह्वल नकुल ने एक अन्य धनुष उठाया।

Addressing Sushena next in these words, viz., — 'Thou art slain.' Bhima took up an arrow. Kama, however, cut off that arrow and struck Bhima himself with three shafts. Then Bhima took up another straight arrow of great impetuosity and sped It at Sushena. But Vrisha cut that arrow also. Then Kama, desirous of rescuing his son, and wishing to make an end of the cruel Bhimasena, struck the latter with three and seventy fierce arrows. Then Sushena taking up an excellent bow capable of bearing a great strain, pierced Nakula with five arrows in the arms and the chest. Nakula, then piercing his antagonist with twenty strong shafts capable of bearing a great strain, uttered a loud roar and inspired Kama with fright.
