कण्व ने कहा — मातलि को सुमुख नामक नाग को देखकर अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुआ देख, नारद ने उसे उस नाग के कुल की श्रेष्ठता और उसके पराक्रम का परिचय दिया। नारद ने कहा — "यह नागकुमार ऐरावत के वंश में उत्पन्न हुआ है और सुमुख के नाम से जाना जाता है। यह आर्यक का प्रिय पौत्र है और वामन की पुत्री का पुत्र है। हे मातलि, इस युवा नाग के पिता का नाम चिकुर था, जिन्हें विनता के पुत्र ने कुछ समय पूर्व ही मार डाला।" यह सुनकर मातलि अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुआ और नारद को सम्बोधित करते हुए उस सारथि ने कहा — "हे मुनिवर, यह नागश्रेष्ठ मुझे जामाता के रूप में सर्वथा स्वीकार्य है। इसे प्राप्त करने का प्रयत्न कीजिए, क्योंकि अपनी प्रिय पुत्री को इस नाग को अर्पित करने के विचार से मैं अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हूँ।"
English Summary
"Kanwa continued,— Beholding Matali's gratification at seeing the Naga called Sumukha, Narada informed him of the nobility of his parentage and of his feats. And he said, —'Born in the race of Airavata this prince of Nagas is named Sumukha. He is the favourite grandson of Aryaka, and the daughter's son of Vamana. The father of this youth was, O Matali, the Naga called Chikura. Not long before was he slain by Vinata's son'. — Hearing this Matali became highly pleased, and addressing Narada, the charioteer said,— 'This best of Nagas is, O sire, very acceptable to me for a son-in-law. Make an edeavour to secure him, for I am highly pleased at the thought of bestowing on this Naga, O Muni, my dear daughter — ' '
