उसने अर्जुन के घोड़ों को आठ बाणों से बेधा और उनकी ध्वजा को भी एक बाण से। तब अर्जुन ने सिन्धु-नरेश के तीखे बाणों को विफल करते हुए एक साथ दो बाणों से जयद्रथ के सारथी का सिर और उसकी सुसज्जित ध्वजा भी काट डाली। आधार कट जाने पर, बाणों से बिंधी और आहत वह ध्वजा अग्नि की लौ की भाँति भूमि पर गिर पड़ी। इसी बीच सूर्य तेज़ी से अस्त की ओर बढ़ रहा था। तब जनार्दन ने पाण्डु-पुत्र से शीघ्रता से कहा — हे पार्थ, देखो, सिन्धु-नरेश को छः महान् और वीर रथियों ने अपने मध्य में घेर रखा है! हे महाबाहो, जयद्रथ वहाँ भय से प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है! हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ, उन छः रथियों को युद्ध में परास्त किये बिना तुम सिन्धु-नरेश का वध कभी नहीं कर सकते, चाहे तुम निरन्तर कितना भी प्रयत्न करो। इसलिये मैं योग का आश्रय लेकर सूर्य को आच्छादित कर दूँगा। तब सिन्धु-नरेश समझेगा कि सूर्य अस्त हो गया है। प्राण-रक्षा की इच्छा से, हे स्वामी, वह दुष्ट हर्ष के कारण अपने विनाश के लिये अब और छिपा नहीं रहेगा। उस अवसर का लाभ उठाकर, हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, तुम उस पर प्रहार करना। यह सोचकर कि सूर्य सच में अस्त हो गया है, इस कार्य को मत छोड़ना। ये वचन सुनकर विभत्सु ने केशव से कहा — ऐसा ही हो। तब तपोबल से सम्पन्न, समस्त तपस्वियों के स्वामी, हरि नाम से विख्यात कृष्ण ने योग का आश्रय लेकर वह अन्धकार उत्पन्न कर दिया। हे राजन्, तुम्हारे योद्धा यह समझकर कि सूर्य अस्त हो गया है, इस सम्भावना से हर्षित हो उठे कि पार्थ अब अपने प्राण दे देगा। सूर्य को न देखकर तुम्हारे योद्धा आनन्द से भर गये।
English Summary
with six. And then he pierced the steeds of Arjuna with eight arrows and his standard also with one. Then Arjuna, baffling the keen arrows sped by the ruler of the Sindhus, cut off at the same time, with a pair of shafts, the head of Jayadratha's driver and the well-decked standard also of Jayadratha. Its stay cut off and itself pierced and struck with arrows, that standard fell down like a flame of fire. Meanwhile, the sun was going down quickly. Janardana then quickly addressed the son of Pandu and said, 'Behold, O Partha, the ruler of the Sindhus hath, by six mighty and heroic car-warriors, been placed in their midst ! Jaya- dratha also, O mighty-armed one, is waiting there in fear ! Without vanquishing those six car- warriors in battle, O bull among men, thou wilt never be able to slay the ruler of the Sindhus even if thou exer- test thyself without intermission. I shall, therefore, resort to Yoga for shrouding the sun. Then the ruler of the Sindhus will (in conse- quence) behold the sun to have set. Desirous of life, O lord, through joy that wicked wight will no longer, for his destruction, conceal him- self. Availing yourself of that opportunity, thou shouldst then, O best of the Kurus, strike him. Thou shouldst not give up the enterprise, thinking the sun to have really set.' Hearing these words, Vibhatsu replied unto Kesava, saying, 'Let It be so.' Then Krishna, otherwise called Hari, possessed of ascetic powers, that lord of all ascetics, having taken recourse to Yoga, created that darkness. Thy warriors, O king, thinking the sun to have set were filled with delight at the prospect of Partha's laying down his life. Indeed, thy warriors, not seeing the sun, were filled with gladness.
