बाणों की वर्षा एक साथ होने लगी। सूत-पुत्र के धनुष से बाद में छोड़े गए बाण इतनी तीव्र गति से आते थे कि वे पहले छोड़े गए बाणों के पंखों को अपने अग्रभाग से स्पर्श करते हुए चले जाते थे। हे महाराज, उन गिरते हुए बाणों के परस्पर टकराने से आकाश में एक प्रचण्ड अग्निकाण्ड-सा प्रज्वलित होता प्रतीत हुआ। हे राजन्, कर्ण ने शीघ्र ही शत्रुओं के शरीर को भेदने में समर्थ बाणों से दसों दिशाओं को इस प्रकार आच्छादित कर दिया, मानो टिड्डियों के झुण्ड उमड़ते चले आ रहे हों। श्रेष्ठ अस्त्रों का प्रदर्शन करते हुए कर्ण ने अपनी दोनों भुजाओं को — जो लाल चन्दन से अनुलिप्त और मणि तथा स्वर्ण से विभूषित थीं — अत्यन्त वेग से घुमाना आरम्भ किया। तब हे राजन्, अपने बाणों से सभी दिशाओं को मोहित करते हुए कर्ण ने धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर को अत्यन्त पीड़ित किया। इस पर धर्म-पुत्र युधिष्ठिर क्रोध से भर उठे और उन्होंने कर्ण को पचास तीक्ष्ण बाणों से आहत किया। तत्पश्चात् बाणों की उस वर्षा से उत्पन्न अन्धकार के कारण युद्ध का दृश्य अत्यन्त भयावह हो उठा। हे महाराज, आपकी सेना के वीर जब उस संहार में काटे जा रहे थे, तब उनमें से हाहाकार और विलाप की करुण ध्वनियाँ उठने लगीं।
