वैशम्पायन ने कहा — भीम के उन पराक्रमों को सुनकर राजा युधिष्ठिर विस्मय से भर गए और उन्होंने जनार्दन से कहा — हे वृष्णिकुलभूषण, क्रोध में आकर जिन्होंने पृथ्वी को क्षत्रियों से रहित कर दिया था, उन महात्मा भीम का पराक्रम साक्षात् शक्र के समान था। क्षत्रिय-वंशों के बालक भीम के भय से व्याकुल होकर गायों, समुद्र, चीतों, भालुओं और वानरों द्वारा छिपाए और पाले गए। यह मनुष्यलोक सर्वथा प्रशंसनीय है और वे लोग धन्य हैं जो इसमें निवास करते हैं, क्योंकि यहाँ एक ब्राह्मण ने ऐसा कार्य सम्पन्न किया जो अत्यन्त धर्मसंगत भी था। यह वार्तालाप समाप्त होने पर वे दोनों तेजस्वी पुरुष — अक्षय कीर्तिवाले कृष्ण और युधिष्ठिर — उस स्थान की ओर चले जहाँ गंगा के शक्तिशाली पुत्र शरशय्या पर शयन कर रहे थे। उन्होंने भीष्म को बाणों की शय्या पर लेटे हुए देखा, जो अपनी किरणों से आवृत सायंकालीन सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी दिखाई दे रहे थे। कुरुवंश के उस वीर को अनेक तपस्वियों ने घेर रखा था, जैसे स्वर्ग के देवता शतक्रतु इन्द्र को घेरे रहते हैं। जिस स्थान पर वे लेटे थे वह अत्यन्त पवित्र था, क्योंकि वह ओघवती नदी के तट पर स्थित था। उन्हें दूर से देखकर कृष्ण, धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर, चारों पाण्डव और शारद्वत के नेतृत्व में अन्य सभी अपने वाहनों से उतर पड़े। उन्होंने अपने चंचल मनों को एकाग्र किया और सभी इन्द्रियों को संयमित करके महर्षियों के पास पहुँचे। व्यास के नेतृत्व में उन ऋषिश्रेष्ठों को प्रणाम करके गोविन्द, सात्यकि और अन्य सभी गंगापुत्र के समीप गए। महान् तपोबल से सम्पन्न गंगापुत्र को देखकर यदु और कुरुवंश के राजकुमार, जो पुरुषों में अग्रगण्य थे, उन्हें चारों ओर से घेरकर बैठ गए। बुझती हुई अग्नि के समान दिखाई दे रहे भीष्म को देखकर केशव का हृदय कुछ उदास हो गया और उन्होंने उनसे इस प्रकार कहा।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said,— "King Yudhishthira, hearing of those feats of Bama, became filled with wonder and said unto Janarddana, — 0 thou of Vrishni's race, the prowess of the high-souled Bama, who in wrath had freed the Earth of Kshattriyas, was like that of Sakra himself! The scions of Kshattriyas, troubled with the fear of Bama, were concealed (and brought up) by kine, Ocean, leopards, bears and apes 1 Worthy of every praise is this world of men and fortunate are they that reside in It where a feat, that, was again so righteous, was accomplished by a Brahmana !' After this discourse was ended, those two illustrious persons, viz., Krishna of Unfading glory and Yudhishthira proceeded thither where the puissant son of Ganga lay on his bed of arrows. They then beheld Bhishma stretched on his arrowy bed and resembling in splendour the evening Sun covered with his own rays. The Kuru hero was surrounded by many ascetics like he of a hundred sacrifices by the deities of heaven. The spot on which he lay was highly sacred, being situate on the banks of the river Oghavati. Beholding him from a distance, Krishna and Dharma's royal son, and the four Pandavas, and the others headed by Saradwat, alighted from their vehicles and collecting their restless minds and concentrating all their senses, approached the great Rishis. Saluting those foremost of Rishis headed by Vyasa, Govinda and Satyaki and the others approached the son of Ganga. Beholding Ganga's son of great ascetic merit, the Yadu and Kuru princes, those foremost of men, took their seats, surrounding him. Seeing Bhishma looking like a fire about to die out, Kesava with a rather cheerless heart addressed him as follows.
