वैशम्पायन ने कहा — तपस्वियों के ये वचन सुनकर, उनके मना करने पर भी, वह महाबाहु पुरुषश्रेष्ठ उस जल को देखने चला गया। किसी महान ऋषि के नाम पर विख्यात उस उत्तम तीर्थ सौभद्र पर पहुँचकर, उस शत्रुओं को दग्ध करने वाले वीर ने स्नान के लिए उसमें छलाँग लगा दी। ज्यों ही वह नरश्रेष्ठ जल में उतरा, त्यों ही वहाँ रहने वाले एक विशाल मगर ने उसका पैर दबोच लिया। किन्तु कुन्ती के पुत्र, समस्त बलशालियों में अग्रणी, वह महाबाहु धनञ्जय उस जल-विहारी को छटपटाते हुए भी पकड़कर बलपूर्वक तट पर खींच लाया। परन्तु यशस्वी अर्जुन द्वारा भूमि पर खींचे जाते ही वह मगर रूपान्तरित हो गया।
