सञ्जय ने कहा — इसी बीच, हे राजन्, द्रोण के पुत्र अश्वत्थामा एक विशाल रथ-सेना से घिरे हुए अचानक उस स्थान की ओर बढ़े जहाँ पार्थ थे। जैसे तट उठती हुई सागर-लहरों को रोक लेता है, वैसे ही सौरिन (कृष्ण) को अपना सहायक पाकर वीर पार्थ ने वेग से आते हुए अश्वत्थामा का सामना किया। तब, हे नरेश, द्रोण के उस पराक्रमी पुत्र ने क्रोध से भरकर अर्जुन और वासुदेव दोनों को अपने बाणों से आच्छादित कर दिया। दोनों कृष्णों को बाणों से ढका देख पाण्डव-सेना के महारथी और कौरव पक्ष के जो वीर वह दृश्य देख रहे थे, वे सभी अत्यन्त विस्मित हो उठे। तब अर्जुन ने मानो मुस्कुराते हुए एक दिव्यास्त्र का आह्वान किया। किन्तु हे भारत, ब्राह्मण अश्वत्थामा ने उस युद्ध में उस अस्त्र को विफल कर दिया। वस्तुतः अर्जुन ने द्रोणपुत्र का वध करने की इच्छा से जितने भी अस्त्र छोड़े, उन सभी को उस महाधनुर्धर ने उस संग्राम में निष्फल कर दिया। उस भयंकर युद्ध के चलते हुए हे राजन्, उस अस्त्र-संग्राम में हमने द्रोण-पुत्र को साक्षात् काल के समान देखा, जिसका मुख विकराल रूप से खुला हुआ था। उसने सीधे बाणों से दिशाओं और विदिशाओं को आच्छादित करते हुए वासुदेव को दाहिनी भुजा में तीन बाण मारे। तब अर्जुन ने उस महात्मा शत्रु के समस्त अश्वों को मारकर उस युद्धभूमि में एक अत्यन्त भयंकर रक्त-नदी प्रवाहित कर दी, जो परलोक की ओर जाती थी और जिसमें अनेक प्रकार के प्राणी बहते दिखाई देते थे। सभी दर्शकों ने देखा कि अश्वत्थामा की सेना के अनेक रथी अपने रथों सहित पार्थ के धनुष से छूटे बाणों द्वारा मारे और नष्ट किए जा रहे थे। अश्वत्थामा ने भी अपने शत्रुओं का संहार करते हुए वहाँ यम के लोक की ओर जाने वाली एक भयंकर रक्त-नदी बहा दी। द्रोण-पुत्र और पार्थ के बीच उस घोर और भयावह युद्ध के चलते योद्धा एक-दूसरे की कोई परवाह न करते हुए लड़ते रहे और इधर-उधर दौड़ते रहे। जिन रथों के अश्व और सारथी मारे जा चुके थे, जिन अश्वों के सवार मारे जा चुके थे, और जिन हाथियों के महावत और चालक मारे जा चुके थे — उन सबके कारण, हे राजन्, पार्थ ने उस युद्ध में एक भीषण संहार किया। पार्थ के धनुष से निकले बाणों से प्राण गँवाकर रथी भूमि पर गिर पड़े। साज-सामान से मुक्त हुए अश्व इधर-उधर भागने लगे। पार्थ के इन पराक्रमों को देखकर, वह रणभूषण वीर द्रोण-पुत्र शीघ्र ही उस विजयियों में अग्रगण्य पार्थ के सम्मुख आया, अपना सुवर्णभूषित विकराल धनुष को टंकार दी, और फिर उसे चारों ओर से अनेक तीखे बाणों से बेध दिया। हे राजन्, धनुष को पुनः खींचकर द्रोण-पुत्र ने एक पंखयुक्त बाण से अर्जुन की छाती पर निर्दयतापूर्वक प्रहार किया।
English Summary
(Incidents of the Battle contd.) Sanjaya said, "Meanwhile Drona's son, surrounded by a large car-force, O king, suddenly proceeded to that spot where Partha was. Like the continent withstanding the surging ocean, the heroic Partha having Saurin (Krishna) for his help-mate withstood the impetuously rushing Aswatthaman. Then, O monarch, the valiant son of Drona, filled with rage, covered both Arjuna and Vasudeva with his shafts. Be- holding the two Krishnas shrouded with arrows, the great car-warriors (of the Pandava army), as also the Kurus that witnessed It, wondered exceedingly. Then Arjuna, as if smiling, invoked into existence a celes- tial weapon. The Brahmana Aswatthaman, however, O Bharata, baffled that weapon in that battle. Indeed, all those weapons that Arjuna sped from desire of slaying the son of Drona, were baffled by the latter, that great bowman, in that encounter. Having covered all the points of the compass, cardinal and subsidiary, with straight arrows, he pierced Vasudeva with three arrows in the right arm. Then Arjuna, slaying all the steeds of his high-souled assailant, caused the Earth in that battle to be covered with a river of blood that was exceedingly awful that led towards the other world, and that had diverse kinds of creatures floating on It. All the spectators beheld a large number of car-warriors along with their cars, belonging to the division of Aswatthaman, slain and destroyed by means of the arrows sped from Partha's bow. Aswatthaman also, slaying his enemies, caused a terrible river of blood to flow there that led to Yama's domains. During the progress of that fierce and awful battle between Drona's son and Partha, the combatants fought, without showing any regard for one another, and rushed hither and thither. In consequence of cars having their steeds and drivers slain, and steeds having their riders slain, and elephants having their riders and guides slain, an awful carnage, O king, was made by Partha in that battle ! Car- warriors, deprived of life with shafts sped from Partha's bow, fell down. Steeds freed from their trappings, ran hither and thither. Beholding those feats of Partha, that ornament of battle, that valiant son of Drona, quickly approached the former, that foremost of victorious men, shook his formidable bow decked with gold, and then pierced him from every side with many sharp arrows. Once more bending the bow, O king, the son of Drona cruelly struck Arjuna, aiming at the chest, with a winged arrow.
