वैशम्पायन ने कहा — कृष्ण के ये वचन सुनकर राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने तत्काल विदुर को, जो समस्त धर्म-शास्त्रों के ज्ञाता थे, सम्बोधित किया। राजा ने कहा — हे पुत्र, जाओ और महाबुद्धिमती गान्धारी को यहाँ ले आओ। उनके साथ मिलकर मैं इस दुष्ट-हृदय पुत्र को समझाने का प्रयत्न करूँगा। यदि वे इस दुराचारी और कुटिल-मन वाले को शान्त कर सकें, तो हम अभी भी अपने मित्र कृष्ण के वचनों के अनुसार आचरण कर सकते हैं। सम्भव है कि शान्ति के पक्ष में वचन कहकर वे इस लोभ से पीड़ित और दुष्ट सहयोगियों से घिरे मूर्ख को सही मार्ग दिखाने में सफल हों। यदि वे दुर्योधन द्वारा उत्पन्न होने वाली इस महान और भयंकर आपदा को दूर कर सकें, तो यह सदा के लिए सुख और शान्ति की प्राप्ति एवं रक्षा का कारण बनेगा। राजा के ये वचन सुनकर विदुर ने धृतराष्ट्र की आज्ञा से महादूरदर्शिनी गान्धारी को वहाँ उपस्थित किया। तब धृतराष्ट्र ने गान्धारी को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — हे गान्धारी, देखो, तुम्हारा यह दुष्टात्मा पुत्र मेरी समस्त आज्ञाओं का उल्लंघन करते हुए राज्य की लालसा में राज्य और जीवन दोनों को संकट में डालने पर उतारू है। दुष्ट-हृदय और अल्पबुद्धि होने के कारण यह अपने पापी मन्त्रियों सहित, अपने गुरुजनों की अवहेलना करते हुए और हितैषियों के वचनों को तुच्छ जानते हुए, किसी असंस्कृत व्यक्ति की भाँति सभा से चला गया है।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said, — "Hearing these words of Krishna, king Dhritarashtra lost no time in addressing Vidura, who was conversant with all dictates of virtue. And the king said, — 'Go, O child, unto Gandhari, possessed of great wisdom and foresight and bring >ier hither. With her I will solicit this wicked-hearted (son of mine). If she can pacify this wicked wretch, of evil heart, we may yet be able to act according to the words of our friend Krishna. It may be that speaking words in recommendation of peace, she may yet succeed in pointing out the right path to this fool, afflicted by avarice and having wicked allies. If she can dispel this great and dreadful calamity (about to be) occasion- ecLby Duryodhana, It will then conduce to the attainment and preserva- tion of happiness and peace for ever and ever1 — Hearing these words of the king, Vidura, at Dhritarashtra's command, brought (thither) Gandhari, possessed of great foresight. And Dhritarashtra then addressed Gandhari and said, — 'Behold, O Gandhari, this thy son of wicked soul, transgressing all my commands, is about to sacrifice both sovereignty and life in consequence of his lust for sovereignty. Of wicked soul and little understanding, he hath, like one of uncultivated mind, left the court, with his sinful counsellors, disregarding his superiors and setting at naught the words of his well-wishers.' '
