धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — हे सञ्जय, तुम मुझे बताते हो कि भीष्म — वह पुरुषों में सिंह, जो हमारा आश्रय थे, जिनके बल पर कुरु अपने शत्रुओं से युद्ध कर रहे थे, जिनके पराक्रम पर निर्भर होकर मेरे पुत्र ने कभी पाण्डवों की गणना तक नहीं की — वह महाबली योद्धा शत्रु के हाथों कैसे मारे गए? हाय, यह कैसे हुआ? प्राचीन काल में, जब सभी देवता दानवों के संहार में लगे थे, तब उन्होंने भी उस अजेय योद्धा का — मेरे उच्च व्रतधारी पिता का — सहारा लिया था। वह पुत्रों में अग्रणी, महातेजस्वी थे, जिनके जन्म पर लोकविख्यात शन्तनु ने अपने समस्त शोक, विषाद और दुःख त्याग दिए थे। हे सञ्जय, तुम मुझे कैसे बता सकते हो कि वह यशस्वी वीर, सबके महान आश्रय, वह विवेकशील और पवित्र पुरुष — जो अपने धर्म के पालन में निष्ठावान थे, वेदों और उनकी शाखाओं के तत्त्वों के ज्ञाता थे — मारे गए? समस्त अस्त्र-शस्त्रों में निपुण, विनम्र, सौम्य, पूर्णतः जितेन्द्रिय और महातेजस्वी उन शन्तनु-पुत्र के वध का समाचार सुनकर मेरा हृदय व्याकुल हो उठता है।
English Summary
"Dhritarashtra said,— (continued) Thou tellest me, O Sanjaya, if the dis- appearance of that Bhishma, that tiger among men, who was our refuge and relying upon whom the Kurus were fighting with their foes, that warrior of mighty strength relying on whose energy my son had never reckoned the Pandavas, alas, how hath he been slain by the enemy ?» In days of yore, all the gods while engaged in slaying the Danavas, sought the aid of that invincible warrior, viz., my father of high vows! That foremost of sons endued with great energy, on whose birth the world-renowned Santanu abandoned all grief, melancholy, and sorrows, how canst thou tell me, O Sanjaya, that that celebrated hero, that great refuge of all, that wise and holy personage who was devoted to the duties of his order and conversant with the truths of the Vedas and their branches, hath been slain ? Accomplished in every weapon and endued with humility, gentle and with passions under full control and possessed of great energy as he was, alas, hearing that son of Santanu
