पाण्डव भी क्रोध से भरे हुए, महाबली सिंहों के समान भयंकर रूप धारण किए, सुभद्रा के पुत्र को बचाने की इच्छा से हमारी ओर दौड़े आ रहे हैं।" इस प्रकार सम्बोधित किए जाने पर कर्ण ने, तुम्हारे पुत्र का हित करने की इच्छा से, क्रोधपूर्वक अजेय अभिमन्यु पर तीखे बाणों की वर्षा की। वीर कर्ण ने, मानो अपने प्रतिद्वन्द्वी की अवहेलना करते हुए, रणभूमि में अभिमन्यु के अनुयायियों को भी अत्यन्त तीक्ष्ण बाणों से बींध डाला। किन्तु हे राजन्, महात्मा अभिमन्यु द्रोण की ओर बढ़ने की इच्छा से राधापुत्र को तिहत्तर बाणों से शीघ्र ही बींध गए। उस समय तुम्हारी सेना का कोई भी रथी, कौरव-सेना के प्रमुख रथियों को पीड़ित करते हुए इन्द्रपुत्र के पुत्र अभिमन्यु की द्रोण की ओर बढ़ती हुई गति को रोकने में सफल न हो सका। तब समस्त धनुर्धरों में सर्वाधिक सम्मानित कर्ण ने, विजय की अभिलाषा से, सुभद्रापुत्र के उत्तम अस्त्रों को विचलित करते हुए उन्हें सैकड़ों बाणों से बींध डाला। अस्त्र-विद्या के ज्ञाताओं में अग्रगण्य, परशुराम के उस वीर शिष्य ने अपने अस्त्रों से शत्रुओं द्वारा अपराजेय अभिमन्यु को इस प्रकार पीड़ित किया। राधापुत्र के अस्त्र-वर्षण से युद्ध में पीड़ित होने पर भी सुभद्रापुत्र, जो पराक्रम में किसी देवता के समान थे, तनिक भी व्यथित न हुए। तब अर्जुनपुत्र ने पत्थर पर पैने किए हुए और तीखी नोक वाले बाणों से अनेक वीर योद्धाओं के धनुष काटते हुए कर्ण को पीड़ित करना आरम्भ किया।
