वैशम्पायन ने कहा — क्रोध से लाल नेत्रों के साथ, क्षण भर विचार करके, दाशार्ह कुल के उस वीर ने कुरुओं की उस सभा में दुर्योधन को सम्बोधित करते हुए ये वचन कहे — क्या तू वीरों की शय्या चाहता है? निश्चय ही तुझे वह मिलेगी, तेरे मन्त्रियों सहित। थोड़ी प्रतीक्षा कर — महाविनाश होने वाला है। हे अल्पबुद्धि, तू समझता है कि तूने पाण्डवों के प्रति कोई अपराध नहीं किया? इन उपस्थित राजाओं को निर्णय करने दे। हे भारत, महात्मा पाण्डवों की समृद्धि देखकर जलते हुए तूने सुबल-पुत्र के साथ मिलकर जुए की कुटिल योजना बनाई। हे तात, वे तेरे धर्मात्मा, सरल-स्वभाव और श्रेष्ठ बन्धु भला किस प्रकार उस छली शकुनि के साथ ऐसे दुष्कर्म में प्रवृत्त होते? हे महाबुद्धिमान, जुआ सज्जनों की भी बुद्धि हर लेता है, और दुर्जनों में तो इससे फूट और घोर अनर्थ ही उत्पन्न होते हैं। वह भयंकर विपत्ति का स्रोत — जुए का वह कुचक्र — तूने ही अपने दुष्ट मन्त्रियों के साथ मिलकर रचा था, धर्मशील जनों से कोई परामर्श किए बिना। तेरे अतिरिक्त और कौन था जो किसी भाई की पत्नी को उस प्रकार अपमानित करने का साहस करता, जैसा तूने द्रौपदी के साथ किया — उसे सभा में घसीटकर लाना और उसके प्रति वैसी भाषा का प्रयोग करना? पाण्डु-पुत्रों की वह पटरानी, जो उच्च कुल में जन्मी थी, उत्तम आचरण से सम्पन्न थी और उन्हें अपने प्राणों से भी प्रिय थी — उसके साथ तूने ऐसा व्यवहार किया। उस सभा में दुःशासन ने उन वीरों के प्रति जो वचन कहे, वे सभी कौरव जानते हैं।

Vaisampayana said,— "Reflecting (for a moment), with eyes red in anger he, of Dasarha's race, addressing Duryodhana in that assembly of the Kurus, then said these words : — Wishest thou for a bed of heroes ? Verily, thou shalt have It, with thy counsellors. Wait (for a short while), a great slaughter will ensue. Thou thinkest, ^O thou of little understanding, that thou hast committed no offence against the Pandavas ? Let the (assembled) moaarchs judge. Grieved at the prosperity of the high-souled Pandavas, thou conspiredst, O Bharata, with Suvala's son about the gambling match. O sire, how could those virtuous, honest, and superior kinsmen of thine (otherwise) engage in such a wicked act with the deceitful Sakuni ? O fhou that art endued with great wisdom, gambling robs even the gooJ.of their understanding, and as reg.mls the wicked, disunion and dire consequence spring from It. It was thou who hadst devised with thy wicked counsellors, that terrible source of calamity in the form of the gambling match.; without consulting with persons of righteous behaviour- Who else is there, capable of inspiring a brother's wife in the way thou didst[or of dragging her into the assembly and addressing her in language thou hadst used towards Draupadi ? Of noble parentage, and endued with excellent behaviour, and dearer to them than their very lives, the queen-consort of Pandu's sons was treated even thus by thee.
