तब कुरुओं और पाण्डवों के बीच वह भयंकर और भीषण युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ, जिसमें दोनों पक्ष महान यश प्राप्त करने की अभिलाषा से प्रेरित थे। हे राजन् भरतश्रेष्ठ, उस रणभूमि में योद्धाओं के कोलाहल का अनवरत स्वर गूँजता रहा, जो एक-दूसरे को नाम लेकर ललकारते थे। जिस किसी योद्धा के पिता-पक्ष अथवा माता-पक्ष से, या उसके कर्मों और आचरण से, उपहास की कोई सामग्री मिलती थी, उसे उस युद्ध में उसके प्रतिद्वन्द्वी द्वारा वह सब सुनाया जाता था। हे राजन्, उन वीर योद्धाओं को उस युद्ध में एक-दूसरे को इस प्रकार ऊँचे स्वर से धिक्कारते देख मुझे ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ कि उनकी आयु समाप्त हो चली है। उन क्रोध से भरे, अपरिमित तेजस्वी वीरों के शरीरों को देखकर मेरे हृदय में महान भय उत्पन्न हुआ कि इसके परिणाम कितने भयावह होंगे। तत्पश्चात् हे राजन्, पाण्डव और कौरव — वे सभी महारथी — एक-दूसरे पर प्रहार करते हुए अपने तीखे बाणों से एक-दूसरे को विदीर्ण करने लगे।
English Summary
"The battle then commenced, awful and terrible, between the Kurus and the Panda v as, both of whom were inspired with the desire of winning great fame. A perfect Babel of voices of the shouting warriors was incessantly heard there, O royal Bharata, as they addressed one another by name. He who had anything, by his father's or mother's side or in respect of his acts or conduct, that could furnish matter for ridicule, was in that battle made to hear It by his antagonist. Beholding those brave warriors loudly rebuking one another in that battle, I thought, O king, that their periods of life had been run out. Beholding the bodies of those angry heroes of immeasurable energy a great fear entered my heart, respecting the dire consequences that would ensue. Then the Panda v as, O king, and the Kauravas also, mighty car- warriors all, striking one another, began to mangle one another with their keen shafts."
