तब धनञ्जय ने एक भयंकर और विकराल नदी प्रवाहित की — जो वैतरणी के समान थी, जिसमें भयावह वस्तुएँ भरी थीं और जो कायरों के हृदय में भय को और अधिक बढ़ाने वाली थी। मनुष्यों और पशुओं की मज्जा और चर्बी उसका कीचड़ थी। रक्त उसकी धारा था। अंगों और हड्डियों से भरी वह नदी अथाह गहरी थी। प्राणियों के केश उसके काई और जलीय वनस्पति थे। सिर और भुजाएँ उसके तटों पर पड़े पाषाण थे। ध्वजाओं और पताकाओं से वह सुसज्जित थी, जो उसके रूप को विचित्र बनाती थीं। छत्र और धनुष उसकी लहरें थे। विशाल मृत हाथियों के शव उसमें प्रचुर मात्रा में तैर रहे थे, और सैकड़ों बेड़ों के समान रथ उसकी सतह पर बह रहे थे। अनगिनत मृत अश्वों के शव उसके तट थे। रथों के पहिये, जुए, धुरे, अक्ष और कूबर, तथा भाले, तलवारें, शक्तियाँ, परशु और सर्प के समान बाण — इन सबके कारण उसे पार करना अत्यन्त दुष्कर था। काक और कङ्क उसके मगर थे। गीदड़ उसके मकर बनकर उसे भयावह बना रहे थे। भयंकर गृध्र उसके ग्राह थे। गीदड़ों के रोदन से वह और भी भयंकर हो उठी थी। उछलते-कूदते प्रेतों, पिशाचों और सहस्रों अन्य प्रकार के भूतों से वह भरी हुई थी। उस पर असंख्य निर्जीव योद्धाओं के शव तैरते जा रहे थे। अर्जुन का मुख उस समय साक्षात् यमराज के समान दिख रहा था — उनके इस पराक्रम को देखकर कुरु-सेना में ऐसा भय व्याप्त हो गया, जैसा पहले कभी नहीं हुआ था।
English Summary
Dhananjaya then caused a fierce and terrible river full of fearful objects and enhancing the fear of the timid, to flow resembling the Vaitarani itself. The marrow and fat ( of men and animals ) formed its mire. Blood formed its current. Full of limbs and bones, It was fathomless in depth. The hairs of creatures formed its moss and weeds. Heads and arms formed the stones on its shores. It was decked with standards and banners that variegated its aspect. Umbrellas and bows formed the waves. And It abounded with bodies of huge elephants deprived of life, and It teemed with cars that formed hundreds of rafts floating on its surface. And the carcases of countless steeds formed its banks. And It was difficult to cross in consequence of wheels and yokes and shafts and Akshas and Kuveras of cars, and spears and swords and darts and battle-axes and shafts looking like snakes. And ravens and kankas formed its alligators. And jackals, forming its Makaras, made It terrible. And fierce vultures formed its shark?. And It became frightful in consequence of the howls of jackals. And It abounded with capering ghosts and Pisachas and thousands of other kinds of spirits. And on It floated countless bodies of warriors destitute of life.
