वासुदेव ने कहा — हे राजन्, जब शाल्व अनर्त नगरी को छोड़कर चला गया, तब तुम्हारे महान राजसूय यज्ञ की समाप्ति पर मैं द्वारका लौटा। वहाँ पहुँचकर मैंने देखा कि द्वारका अपनी आभा से रहित हो गई है। हे महाराज, न वेद-पाठ के स्वर सुनाई दे रहे थे, न यज्ञ-हवन हो रहे थे। श्रेष्ठ नारियाँ आभूषणों से विहीन थीं और उद्यान अपनी शोभा खो चुके थे। यह दृश्य देखकर मन में आशंका उत्पन्न हुई और मैंने हृदिक-पुत्र से पूछा — हे नरश्रेष्ठ, वृष्णियों की इस नगरी के स्त्री-पुरुष इस प्रकार शोकाकुल क्यों हैं? हे राजश्रेष्ठ, मेरे इस प्रकार पूछने पर हृदिक-पुत्र कृतवर्मा ने मुझे शाल्व द्वारा नगरी पर किए गए आक्रमण और उसके पश्चात् वहाँ से उसके प्रस्थान का विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन किया। हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, यह सब सुनकर मैंने उसी क्षण शाल्व का वध करने का निश्चय कर लिया। हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, तब मैंने नगरवासियों को धैर्य बँधाया और प्रसन्नचित्त होकर राजा आहुक, आनकदुन्दुभि तथा वृष्णि वंश के प्रमुख वीरों को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — हे यादवश्रेष्ठों, तुम सब सावधानी के साथ नगर की रक्षा करो और जानो कि मैं शाल्व का वध करने जा रहा हूँ।
English Summary
(Arjunabhigamana Parva continued) "Va^udeva said, 'When Salwa had left the city of the Anarttas, I returned to It, O king on the completion of thy great Ilojasuya sacrifice I On my arrival I found Dwaraka shorn of its splendour, and, O great monarch, there were not sounds of Vedic recitation or sacrificial offer- ings. And the excellent damsels were all destitute of ornaments, and the gardens were devoid of beauty. And alarmed by the aspect, I asked the son of Hridika saying, 'Why is It that the men and women of the city of the Vrishnis are so woe-begone, O tiger among men ?' O thou best of kings, thus asked the son of Hridika (Kritavarman) related to me in detiil the invasion of the city by Salwa, and his subsequent departure from It. And, O thou foremost of Bharatas, hearing all, even then I made up my mind to slay Salwa. And encouraging the citizens, O best of Bharatas, I cheerfully addressed king Ahuka, and Anakdundhuvi, and the chief heroes of the Vrishni race, saying, 'Do ye, O Hulls among the Yadavas, stay in the city, taking every care, and know that I go to slay fsal*
