सञ्जय ने कहा — हे राजन्, महाबाहु भीम को देखकर महापराक्रमी सूतपुत्र कर्ण क्रोध से लाल आँखें किए उनकी ओर दौड़ा। भीमसेन के सामने आपकी सेना को भागते देख, हे राजन्, बलशाली कर्ण ने महाप्रयास से उसे पुनः संगठित किया। महाबाहु कर्ण ने आपके पुत्र की सेना को एकत्र कर उन पाण्डवों की ओर प्रस्थान किया, जो युद्ध में जीतना अत्यन्त कठिन थे। पाण्डवों के महारथियों ने भी अपने धनुष टंकारते और बाण छोड़ते हुए राधापुत्र कर्ण की ओर प्रयाण किया। भीमसेन, सिनि के पौत्र सात्यकि, शिखण्डी, जनमेजय, महाबली धृष्टद्युम्न, समस्त प्रभद्रक और पुरुषसिंह पाञ्चाल — ये सभी क्रोध से भरे और विजय की अभिलाषा लिए उस युद्ध में आपकी सेना पर चारों ओर से टूट पड़े। उसी प्रकार, हे राजन्, आपकी सेना के महारथी भी पाण्डव-सेना का संहार करने की इच्छा से शीघ्रता पूर्वक उनकी ओर बढ़े। रथों, हाथियों, घोड़ों, पैदल सैनिकों और ध्वजाओं से परिपूर्ण वे दोनों सेनाएँ, हे नरश्रेष्ठ, अत्यन्त अद्भुत रूप धारण कर रही थीं। शिखण्डी कर्ण की ओर बढ़ा और धृष्टद्युम्न बड़ी सेना लेकर आपके पुत्र दुःशासन की ओर। नकुल वृषसेन के सामने गया और युधिष्ठिर चित्रसेन के। हे राजन्, सहदेव उस युद्ध में उलूक के सामने गया। सात्यकि शकुनि की ओर बढ़ा और द्रौपदी के पुत्र शेष कौरवों की ओर। महारथी अश्वत्थामा अत्यन्त सावधानी के साथ अर्जुन के सामने गया। शरद्वान के पुत्र कृप महाधनुर्धर युधामन्यु के विरुद्ध गए और महाबली कृतवर्मा उत्तमौजस के सामने। हे तात, महाबाहु भीमसेन ने अकेले और बिना किसी सहायता के समस्त कुरुओं और आपके पुत्रों की सेना को रोके रखा। भीष्म के वध करने वाले शिखण्डी ने, हे महाराज, अपने पंखयुक्त बाणों से उस युद्ध में निर्भय विचरण करते कर्ण को रोका।

Sanjaya said, "Beholding the mighty-armed Bhima, the Suta's son of great valour, with eyes red in wrath, O king, rushed towards him. Seeing thy army fly away from Bhimasena, the mighty Kama, O king, rallied It with great efforts. The mighty-armed Kama, having rallied thy sou's host, proceeded against the Pandavas, those heroes difficult of defeat in battle. The great car- warriors of the Pandavas also, shaking their bows and shooting their shafts, proceeded against the son of Radha. Bhimasena, and the grandson of Sini, and Sikhandin and Janamejaya, and Dhrishtadyumna of great strength, and all the Prabhadrakas, and those tigers among men, viz., the Panchalas, rilled with rage and ins- pired with desire of victory, rushed in that battle, from every side, against thy army. Similarly, the great car-warriors of thy army, O king, quickly proceeded against the Pandava host, desirous of slaughtering It. Teeming with cars and elephants and horses, and abounding with foot- soldiers and standards, the two armies then, O tiger among men, assum- ed a wonderful aspect. Sikhandin proceeded against Kama, and Dhrishtadyumna proceeded against thy son Dussasana, accompanied by a large force. Nakula proceeded against Vrishasena, while Yudhishthira against Chitrasena. Sahadeva, O king, in that battle, proceeded against Uluka. Satyaki proceeded against Sakuni, and the sons of Draupadi against the other Kauravas. The mighty car- warrior Aswatthaman proceeded, with great care, against Arjuna. Saradwat's son Kripa proceeded against the mighty bowman Yudhamanyu, while Kritavarman of great strength proceeded against Uttamaujas. The mighty-armed Bhimasena, O sire, alone and unsupported, resisted all the Kurus and thy sons at the head of their div ision. The slayer of Bhishma, vie., Sikhandin, then, O monarch, with his winged arrows, resisted Kama, careering fearlessly in that battle.
