जो अगम्य लोक ब्रह्मचर्य से, ज्ञान से, शास्त्रों के परिचय से, और श्रेष्ठ यज्ञों से प्राप्त होते हैं — वे सब तेरे पुत्र ने प्राप्त कर लिये हैं। ज्ञानीजन सदा अपने धर्मपूर्ण कर्मों से स्वर्ग की अभिलाषा रखते हैं, और जो स्वर्ग में निवास करते हैं, वे इस लोक को स्वर्ग से श्रेष्ठ नहीं मानते। इसलिये जो वस्तु अर्जुन के पुत्र को अप्राप्त रही हो, उसके लोभ से उसे इस संसार में वापस लाना सम्भव नहीं, क्योंकि वह वीर रणभूमि में वीरगति पाकर अब स्वर्ग में विराजमान है। तेरे पुत्र ने उस शाश्वत गति को प्राप्त किया है जिसे योगीजन नेत्र मूँदकर ध्यान में, महायज्ञों के अनुष्ठाता, और महान तपस्वी प्राप्त करते हैं। मृत्यु के पश्चात् नवीन देह धारण कर वह वीर अपनी अमर कान्ति से किसी राजा के समान प्रकाशित हो रहा है। निःसन्देह अभिमन्यु ने पुनः अपनी वह चन्द्रमय देह प्राप्त कर ली है जो समस्त द्विजों को अभीष्ट है। वह तेरे शोक का पात्र नहीं है। यह जानकर शान्त हो और अपने शत्रुओं का संहार कर। धैर्य धारण कर। हे निष्पाप राजन्, शोक की आवश्यकता जीवितों को होती है, उन्हें नहीं जो स्वर्ग को प्राप्त हो चुके हैं। जिस जीवित व्यक्ति के लिये हम शोक करते हैं, उसके पाप बढ़ते हैं। इसलिये जो विवेकशील है, वह शोक को त्यागकर मृतक के कल्याण के लिये प्रयत्न करे। जीवित मनुष्य को मृतक के आनन्द, यश और सुख का स्मरण करना चाहिये। यह जानकर ज्ञानीजन कभी शोक में नहीं डूबते, क्योंकि शोक केवल पीड़ा देता है। इसे सत्य जान। उठ! अपने उद्देश्य की सिद्धि के लिये पुरुषार्थ कर। शोक मत कर। तूने मृत्यु की उत्पत्ति और उसकी अतुलनीय तपस्या के विषय में सुना है, और यह भी सुना है कि वह समस्त प्राणियों के प्रति समभाव रखती है। तूने सुना है कि समृद्धि अस्थिर है। तूने यह भी सुना है कि श्रृञ्जय के मृत पुत्र को किस प्रकार पुनर्जीवन प्राप्त हुआ था।
English Summary
inaccessible regions that are attainable by Brahmacharya, by knowledge, by acquaintance with the scriptures, by foremost of sacrifices, even, these have been obtained by thy son. Men of knowledge always desire heaven by their righteous deeds. They that are living in heaven never prefer this world to heaven. Therefore, It is not easy for any desirable thing that might have been unattained by him to bring back into the world Arj una's son slain in battle and now residing in heaven. Thy son has attained to that eternal goal which is attained by yogins with eyes shut in contemplation or by performers of great sacrifices, or people possessed of great ascetic merit. After death, attaining a new body, that hero is shining like a king in his own immortal rays. Indeed, Abhimanyu has once more got his own body of lunar essence that is desirable by all regenerate persons. He deserveth not thy grief.1 Knowing this, be quiet, and slay thy foes. Let fortitude be thine. O sinless one, It is the living that stand in need of our grief, and not they that have attained to heaven. His sins increase, O king, for whomithe living grieve. Therefore, he that is wise, abandoning grief, should strive for (the) benefit (of the dead). The living man should think of the joy, the glory, and the happiness (of the dead). Knowing this, the wise never indulge in grief, for grief is painful. Know this to be true. Rise up ! Strive (to achieve thy purpose). Do not grieve. Thou hast heard of the origin of Death, and her unexampled penances, as also the impartiality of her behaviour towards all creatures. Thou hast heard that prosperity is unstable Thou hast heard how the dead son of Srinjaya was revived.
