वे सभी योद्धा एकसाथ केवल कर्ण पर टूट पड़े। जैसे पर्वत विशाल जलराशि को अपने में समेट लेता है, वैसे ही कर्ण ने उस युद्ध में बिना किसी सहायक के उन सभी उत्साहित और विजय की अभिलाषा से भरे योद्धाओं का सामना किया। वे महारथी कर्ण से टकराकर उसी प्रकार टूट-बिखर गए और चारों ओर लौट गए, जैसे जलराशि पर्वत से टकराकर छिन्न-भिन्न हो जाती है। तथापि उन योद्धाओं और कर्ण के बीच जो संग्राम हुआ, वह रोमांचकारी था। तब धृष्टद्युम्न ने उस युद्ध में राधापुत्र कर्ण पर एक सीधा बाण चलाया और ललकारते हुए कहा — "रुको, रुको।" क्रोध से भरे महारथी कर्ण ने अपना श्रेष्ठ धनुष विजय को कम्पित करते हुए धृष्टद्युम्न के धनुष को काट डाला और उसके विषधर सर्पों के समान बाणों को भी काटकर धृष्टद्युम्न पर नौ बाणों का प्रहार किया। हे निष्पाप, वे बाण पृषत-पुत्र के स्वर्णभूषित कवच को भेदकर रक्त से सन गए और लाक्षारस की भाँति सुन्दर दिखने लगे। तब महारथी धृष्टद्युम्न ने उस टूटे हुए धनुष को फेंककर दूसरा धनुष और विषधर सर्पों के समान अनेक बाण उठाए। उन सत्तर सीधे बाणों से उसने कर्ण को बींध डाला। उसी प्रकार, हे राजन्, कर्ण ने भी उस युद्ध में पृषत-पुत्र शत्रुतापन धृष्टद्युम्न को विषधर सर्पों के समान अनेक बाणों से आच्छादित कर दिया। द्रोण के वधकर्ता उस महाधनुर्धर ने भी तीखे बाणों से कर्ण को बींधकर प्रत्युत्तर दिया। तब क्रोध से भरे कर्ण ने, हे नरेश, अपने प्रतिद्वन्द्वी पर एक स्वर्णभूषित बाण छोड़ा जो साक्षात् यमदण्ड के समान था। हे राजन्, वह भयंकर बाण पृषत-पुत्र की ओर प्रचण्ड वेग से बढ़ रहा था, तभी सिनि के पौत्र ने अपनी महान हस्तलाघव-कुशलता का प्रदर्शन करते हुए उसे सात टुकड़ों में काट डाला।
English Summary

Like the mountain receiving a vast body of water, Karna, unaided by any one received in that battle all those advancing warriors filled with joy and longing for victory. Those mighty car- warriors encountering Karna, were beat off and broken like a mass of water, and beat back on all sides when It encounters a mountain. The battle, however, that took place between them and Karna made the hair stand on end. Then Dhrishtadyumna assailed the son of Radha with a straight shaft in that battle, and addressing him said, — 'Wait, Wait.' — The mighty car-warrior Karna, filled with rage, shook his foremost of bows called Vijaya, and cutting off the bow of Dhrishtadyumna, as also his arrows resembling snakes of virulent poison assailed Dhrishtadyumna, himself, with nine arrows. Those arrows, O sinless one, piercing through the gold- decked armour of the high- souled son of Prishata, became bathed in blood and looked beautiful like so many cochineal. The mighty car-warrior Dhrishtadyumna, casting aside that broken bow, took up another bow and a number of shafts resembling snakes of virulent poison. With those straight shafts numbering seventy, he pierced Karna. Similarly, O king, Karna, in that battle, covered Prishata's son, that scorcher of foes, with many shafts resembling snakes of virulent poison. The slayer of Drona, that great bowman, retaliated by piercing Karna with many keen shafts. Filled with rage, Karna then, O monarch, sped at his antagonist a gold- decked shaft that resembled a second rod of death. That terrible shaft, O monarch, as It coursed impetuously towards Prishata's son, the grand- son of Sini, O king, cut off into seven fragments, displaying great light- ness of hand.
