अपनी बाणवर्षा से उन महाशक्तिशाली अस्त्रों की वर्षा को काटकर, वासव के पुत्र, उस शत्रुवीरों के संहारक ने उन योद्धाओं का वध करना आरम्भ किया। तब, हे राजन्, सुशर्मा ने एक सीधे बाण से अर्जुन की छाती को बेधा, और फिर तीन और शरों से उन्हें घायल किया। उन बाणों से गहरे आहत होकर और असह्य पीड़ा अनुभव करते हुए अर्जुन अपने रथ के आसन पर बैठ गये। तब समस्त सेना ने ऊँचे स्वर में पुकारा — "पार्थ मारे गये।" इस पर शङ्खों का घोष, नगाड़ों का नाद, अनेक वाद्ययन्त्रों की ध्वनि और ऊँची सिंहनादें वहाँ गूँज उठीं। तब श्वेत अश्वों के स्वामी और कृष्ण को सारथि रखने वाले अपरिमित आत्मा के धनी पार्थ ने चेतना पुनः प्राप्त कर शीघ्र ही ऐन्द्र अस्त्र का आह्वान किया। हे तात, उस अस्त्र से निकले सहस्रों बाण चारों दिशाओं में राजाओं और हाथियों का संहार करते दिखाई दिये। उस युद्ध में सैकड़ों और सहस्रों अश्व तथा योद्धा भी उन अस्त्रों से कटते हुए दृष्टिगोचर हुए। जब सेना इस प्रकार कट रही थी, तब हे भारत, समस्त संशप्तकों और गोपालों के हृदयों में महान भय समा गया। उनमें कोई भी ऐसा पुरुष न था जो अर्जुन से युद्ध कर सके। वहाँ समस्त वीरों के सम्मुख अर्जुन ने संहार करना आरम्भ किया।

Cutting off with his own arrowy downpour that shower of mighty weapons Vasava's son, that slayer of hostile heroes, began to slaughter those warriors. Then Susarman, O king, with a straight arrow, pierced Arjuna in the chest, and then he pierced him with three other shafts. Deeply pierced therewith, and feeling great pain, Arjuna sat down on the terrace of his car. Then all the troops loudly cried out, saying, 'Partha is slain.' At this the blare of conchs, and the peal of drums, and the sound of diverse musical instruments, and loud leonine shouts, arose there. Re- covering his senses, Partha of immeasurable soul, owning white steeds and having Krishna for his driver, speedily invoked the Aindra weapon. Then thousands of arrows, O sire, issuing from that weapon, were seen on all sides to slay kings and elephants. And steeds and warriors, in hun- dreds and thousands, were also seen to be slaughtered in that battle, with these weapons.
