भीष्म ने कहा — हे कृष्ण, हे प्राणियों में श्रेष्ठ, मैं संक्षेप में और विस्तार से तुम्हारी स्तुति करने की इच्छा से ये वचन कह रहा हूँ, तुम इनसे प्रसन्न होओ। तुम शुद्ध हो और शुद्धता के स्वरूप हो। तुम सबसे परे हो। जिसे लोग "वह" कहते हैं, वह तुम ही हो। तुम परमेश्वर हो। हे विश्वात्मन्, हे समस्त प्राणियों के स्वामी, मैं सम्पूर्ण हृदय से तुम्हारी शरण ग्रहण करता हूँ। तुम्हारा न कोई आदि है, न कोई अन्त। तुम सर्वोच्च हो और ब्रह्म हो। न देवता तुम्हें जानते हैं, न ऋषि। दिव्य सृष्टिकर्ता नारायण अथवा हरि ही तुम्हें जानते हैं। नारायण के माध्यम से ऋषि, सिद्ध, महान नाग, देवता और देवर्षि तुम्हारे विषय में थोड़ा-सा जान पाते हैं। तुम सर्वोच्च हो और तुम्हारा कोई ह्रास नहीं होता। देवता, दानव, गन्धर्व, यक्ष और पन्नग — कोई नहीं जानता कि तुम कौन हो और कहाँ से हो। समस्त लोक और समस्त प्राणी तुम में निवास करते हैं और प्रलय के समय तुम में ही समा जाते हैं। जैसे धागे में पिरोए हुए रत्न उसी में टिके रहते हैं, वैसे ही समस्त गुणयुक्त पदार्थ तुम परमेश्वर में स्थित हैं। यह सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड तुम्हारा कर्म है और तुम्हारे अंग हैं। मन और पदार्थ से बना यह विश्व तुम्हारी शाश्वत और सर्वव्यापी आत्मा में उसी प्रकार निवास करता है, जैसे दृढ़ धागे में पिरोई हुई पुष्पमाला। तुम्हें सहस्र मस्तकों, सहस्र चरणों, सहस्र नेत्रों, सहस्र भुजाओं, सहस्र मुकुटों और महातेजस्वी सहस्र मुखों वाले हरि के नाम से जाना जाता है। तुम नारायण कहलाते हो, तुम दिव्यता हो और समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड के आश्रय हो। तुम सूक्ष्म से भी सूक्ष्म हो, स्थूल से भी स्थूल हो, भारी से भी भारी हो और उच्च से भी उच्च हो।

"Bhishma said, — '0 Krishna, O foremost of Beings, be thou pleased with these words which I utter, in brief and in detail, from desire of hymning thy praises 1 Thou art pure and purity's self 1 Thou tranecendeBt all ! Thou art what people say to be THAT. Thou art the Supreme Lord. With my whole heart I seek thy refuge, O universal Soul and Lord of all creatures !* Thou art without beginning and without end. Thou art the highest of the high and Brahma. Neither the gods nor the Rishis know thee ! The divine Creator, called Narayana or Hari, alone knows thee ! Through Narayana, the Rishis, the Siddhas, the great Nagas, the gods, and the celestial Rishis know a little of thee 1 Thou art the highest of the high and knowest no deterioration ! The gods, the Danavas, the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the Pannagas, do not know who thou art and whence art thou ! All the worlds and all created things live in thee, and enter thee (when the dissolution comes). Like gems strung together in a thread, all things that have attributes reside in thee, the Supreme Lord If Having the universe for thy work and the universe for thy limbs, this universe consisting of mind and matter resides in thy eternal and all- pervading soul like a line of flowers strung together in a strong thread. Thou art called Hari, of a thousand heads, thousand feet, thousand eyes, thousand arms, thousand crowns, and thousand faces of great splendour. Thou art called Narayana, divinity, and the refuge of the universe I Thou art the subtilest of the subtile, grossest of the gross, the heaviest of the heavy, and the highest of the high !
