वृष्णि और अन्धक वंश के सभी वीर यह भली-भाँति जानते थे कि यदि उन्होंने असावधानी बरती तो शाल्व उन्हें मार डालेगा — इसलिए वे सब संयमित और सतर्क रहे। नगर-रक्षकों ने शीघ्र ही आनर्त देश के सभी नट, नर्तक और गायकों को नगर से बाहर कर दिया। नदियों पर बने सभी पुल तोड़ दिए गए, नौकाओं का चलना वर्जित कर दिया गया, और नगर के चारों ओर की खाइयों में नीचे नुकीले खम्भे गाड़ दिए गए। नगर के चारों ओर पूरे दो कोस की भूमि को ऊबड़-खाबड़ बना दिया गया, उसमें गड्ढे और खाइयाँ खोदी गईं, और भूमि के नीचे दाहक पदार्थ छिपा दिए गए। हे निष्पाप, हमारा दुर्ग स्वभाव से ही सुदृढ़ है, सदा सुरक्षित रहता है, और सब प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से परिपूर्ण है। इन सब तैयारियों के कारण हमारा नगर शत्रु का सामना करने के लिए पहले से कहीं अधिक सुसज्जित हो गया था। हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, इन सब व्यवस्थाओं के कारण वह नगर साक्षात् इन्द्र की पुरी के समान प्रतीत होता था। हे राजन्, शाल्व के आगमन के समय, बिना निश्चित संकेत दिखाए कोई भी वृष्णियों और अन्धकों के उस नगर में न प्रवेश कर सकता था, न बाहर जा सकता था। नगर की सभी गलियाँ और खुले स्थान असंख्य हाथियों और घोड़ों से भरे हुए थे। हे महाबाहो, सभी योद्धाओं को भत्ता, वेतन, रसद, अस्त्र-शस्त्र और वस्त्र देकर विशेष रूप से संतुष्ट किया गया था। योद्धाओं में ऐसा कोई न था जिसे स्वर्ण में पारिश्रमिक न मिला हो, ऐसा कोई न था जिसे कुछ भी न दिया गया हो, ऐसा कोई न था जिस पर किसी प्रकार का उपकार न किया गया हो, और ऐसा कोई न था जिसकी वीरता परखी न गई हो। हे कमलनयन, इस प्रकार सुव्यवस्थित रक्षा-व्यवस्था से परिपूर्ण द्वारका की रक्षा आहुक (उग्रसेन) ने की।
English Summary
And all the Vrishnis and the Andhakas, well- knowing that they would be slain by Salwa if they behaved carelessly, remained sober and watchful. And the police soon drove out of the city all mimes and dancers and singers of the Anartta country. And all the bridges over- rivers were destroyed, and boats forbidden to ply, and the trenches 88 MAHABHAEATA (around the city) were spiked -with poles at the bottom. And the land around the city for full two miles was rendered uneven, and holes and pits . were dug thereon, and. combustibles were secreted below the surface. Our1 fort, O sinless one, is naturally strong and always well- defended and, ^filled with all kinds of weapons ! And in consequence of the preparations made, our city was more prepared than ever to meet the foe. And, O chief of the Bharatas, in consequence of all this, the city looked like that of Indra himself. And O King, at the time of Salwa's approach, nobody could either enter or leave the town of the Vrishnis and the Andhakas without presenting the sign that had been agreed upon. And all the streets of the town and the open spaces were filled with numerous elephants and horses ! And, O thou of mighty arms, the combatants were all specially gratified with allow- ances and wages, and rations, and weapons, and dresses ! And amongst the combatants there was none who was not paid in gold, and none who was not paid at all, and none who was not somehow obliged, and none who was not of tried valour ! And, O thou of eyes like lotus leaves, It was thus Dwaraka, abounding in well-ordered arrangements, was defended by Ahuka (Ugrasena) !' "
