धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा — हे पवित्र नारद, जैसा आपने कहा, वैसा ही है। मेरी इच्छा भी ठीक वैसी ही है, किन्तु हे महर्षि, उसे पूरा करने की सामर्थ्य मुझमें नहीं है। वैशम्पायन बोले — कुरुराज ने नारद से ये वचन कहकर फिर कृष्ण की ओर मुख किया और कहा — हे केशव, तुमने मुझे जो कहा, वह स्वर्ग की ओर ले जाने वाला, संसार के लिए हितकर, धर्म के अनुकूल और युक्तिसंगत है। मैं नहीं हे तात, मैं स्वतन्त्र नहीं हूँ। दुर्योधन कभी वह नहीं करता जो मुझे प्रिय हो। इसलिए हे महाबाहु कृष्ण, हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ, मेरे उस मूर्ख और दुष्ट पुत्र को समझाने का प्रयत्न करो, जो मेरी आज्ञा की अवहेलना करता है। हे महाबाहु, वह गान्धारी के हितकारी वचन नहीं सुनता, हे हृषीकेश, न विदुर के, न भीष्म के नेतृत्व में अन्य मित्रों के — जो सभी उसका भला चाहते हैं। इसलिए तुम स्वयं उस कुटिल, विवेकहीन और दुरात्मा राजकुमार को, जो दुर्बुद्धि और पापी हृदय वाला है, उपदेश दो। हे जनार्दन, ऐसा करके तुम वह उत्तम कार्य करोगे जो एक सच्चे मित्र को सदा करना चाहिए। इस प्रकार सम्बोधित होने पर, धर्म और अर्थ के तत्त्वों को जानने वाले वृष्णिकुलभूषण श्रीकृष्ण सदा क्रोधी रहने वाले दुर्योधन के निकट गए और उससे ये मधुर वचन कहे — हे दुर्योधन, हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, मेरे इन वचनों को सुनो, जो विशेष रूप से तुम्हारे हित के लिए कहे जा रहे हैं और हे भारत, तुम्हारे अनुयायियों के हित के लिए भी। तुम एक ऐसे कुल में जन्मे हो जो अपनी महान बुद्धिमत्ता के लिए विख्यात है। तुम्हें उचित है कि जैसा मैं बताऊँ, उसी के अनुसार धर्मपूर्वक आचरण करो। तुम विद्वान हो, उत्तम आचरण से सम्पन्न हो और प्रत्येक श्रेष्ठ गुण से विभूषित हो। जो नीच कुलों में जन्मे हों, या जो दुरात्मा, क्रूर और अकीर्तिमान हों — हे तात, केवल वे ही उस प्रकार आचरण करते हैं जो तुम्हें स्वीकार्य प्रतीत होता है। इस संसार में धर्म और अर्थ के अनुकूल प्रवृत्तियाँ केवल उन्हीं की होती हैं जो धर्मात्मा हैं। जो अधर्मी हैं, उनकी प्रवृत्तियाँ विपरीत और विकृत होती हैं। हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ, जो स्वभाव तुम बार-बार प्रकट कर रहे हो, वह उसी विकृत प्रकार का है। ऐसे आचरण में दृढ़ता पापमय, भयावह, अत्यन्त दुष्ट और मृत्यु तक ले जाने में समर्थ है।
English Summary
"Dhritarashtra said,— 'O holy one, It is even so as thou. O Narada, sayest. My wishes also are precisely such, but, O holy one, I have no power (to carry them out) !' Vaisampayana continued, — "The Kuru king, having said these words unto Narada, then addressed Krishna and said. — 'Thou hast, O Kesava, told me that which leadeth to heaven, what is beneficial to the world, consistent with virtue, and fraught with reason. I am not, how- 246 MAHABHABATA ever, O sire, independent. Duryodhana never doth what is agreeable to me. Do thou. therefore, O mighty-armed Krishna, O best of persons, •trive to persuade that foolish and wicked son of mine, who disobeye^h my commands- O mighty-armed one, he never listeneth to the b eneficial words* O Hrishikesa, of Gandhari, or of wi«e Vidura. or of other friends headed by Bhishma, all of whom seek his good. Do thou, therefore, thyself counsel that crooked, senseless, and wu ked-souled prince, of evil disposition and sinful heart. By doing this. O Jmardd^na, thou shalt have done that noble act wh ch a friend should ever do.' — Thus addressed, he of Vrishni's race, conversant with the truths of virtue and profit, approached nearer to the ever wrathful Duryodhana and said unto him thjse sweet words: — *O Duryodhana, O best of the Kurus, listen to these words of mine, uttered especially for thy good, as also, O Bharata. for that of thy followers. Thou art bom in a race that is distinguished for its great wisdom. It behoveth thee to act righteously as I indicate. Possessed of learning and endued with excellent behaviour, thou art adorned with every excellent quality. They that are born in ignoble families, or are wicked-soulfd. cruel, and •nameless, — they only, O sire, act in the way that seemeth acceptable to thee. In this world, the inclinations of those onlv that are righteous leem to be consistent with the dictates of virtue and profit. The inclinations, however, of those that are unrighteous seem to be perverse. O bull of Bharata's race, the disposition that thou art repeatedly mani- festing is of that perverse kind. Persistence in such behaviour is sinful, frightful, highly wicked, and capable of leading to death itself.
