इस पर, हे राजन्, सत्यवती उन दोनों भागों को लेकर प्रसन्नचित्त और अत्यन्त शीघ्रता से अपनी माता के पास गई और अपने पति के वचन उन्हें सुनाए। हे कुन्तीपुत्र, राजमाता ने अज्ञानवश अपने लिए निर्धारित भाग अपनी पुत्री को दे दिया और पुत्री के लिए निर्धारित भाग स्वयं ग्रहण कर लिया। इस पर सत्यवती के गर्भ में एक भयंकर रूपधारी बालक का संचार हुआ, जो क्षत्रियों का संहारक बनने के लिए नियत था, और सत्यवती का शरीर एक दिव्य तेज से दीप्त हो उठा। भृगुकुल के उस श्रेष्ठ पुरुष ने अपनी दिव्यरूपा पत्नी के गर्भ में ब्राह्मण बालक को देखकर उससे ये वचन कहे — हे कल्याणी, तुम्हारी माता ने पवित्र अन्न के भागों को बदलकर तुम्हारे साथ छल किया है। तुम्हारा पुत्र क्रूर कर्म करने वाला और प्रतिशोध की भावना से भरा होगा। और तुम्हारा भाई, जो तुम्हारी माता से उत्पन्न होगा, वह तपस्या में रत एक ब्राह्मण होगा। तुम्हारे लिए निर्धारित पवित्र अन्न में परम और सर्वव्यापी ब्रह्म का बीज स्थापित किया गया था, और तुम्हारी माता के लिए निर्धारित अन्न में क्षत्रिय तेज का सम्पूर्ण सार। किन्तु हे कल्याणी, दोनों भागों के इस परिवर्तन के कारण जो होना था वह नहीं होगा। तुम्हारी माता को ब्राह्मण पुत्र प्राप्त होगा और तुम्हें एक ऐसा पुत्र मिलेगा जो क्षत्रिय बनेगा। अपने पति के ये वचन सुनकर परम सौभाग्यशालिनी सत्यवती ने साष्टांग प्रणाम किया और काँपते हुए उनके चरणों में अपना मस्तक रखकर बोली — हे पूज्य, आप मुझसे ऐसे वचन न कहें कि तुम्हें ब्राह्मणों में अधम पुत्र प्राप्त होगा, यह आपको उचित नहीं है।
English Summary
Satyavati, upon this, 0 king, taking the two portions of the sanctified food, cheerfully and in great haste, represented the words of her lord unto her mother. The qneen-mother, 0 son of Kunti, gave the portion intended for herself unto her daughter, and herself took from ignorance the portion intended for the latter. Upon this, Satyavati, her body blazing with lustre, conceived a child of terrible form intended to become the exterminator of the Kshattriyas. Beholding Brahmana child lying within her womb, that tiger among the Bhrigus said unto his wife of celestial beauty these words :— Thou hast been deceived by thy mother, 0 blessed lady, in consequence of the substitution of the sanctified morsels. Thy son will become a person of cruel deeds and vindictive heart. Thy brother again (born of thy mother) will be a Brahmana devoted to ascetic penances. Into the sanctified food intended for thee had been placed the seed of the supreme and universal Brahma, while into that intended for thy mother had been placed the sum total of Kshattriya energy. In conse- quence, however, of the substitution of the two portions, 0 blessed lady, that which had been intended will not happen. Thy mother will obtain a Brahmana child while thou wilt obtain a son that will become a Kshattriya 1— Thus addressed by her lord, the highly blessed Satyavati prostrated herself and placing her head at his feet trembling said,— It be- hoveth thee not, 0 holy one, to speak such words unto me, viz., — Thou shalt obtain a wretch among Brahmanas (or thy son) I—
