कौवे, गिद्ध और बगुले चर्बी तथा मज्जा से तृप्त होकर प्रसन्नतापूर्वक विचरण कर रहे थे, और मांसभक्षी अन्य प्राणी भी वहाँ आनन्दित हो रहे थे। किन्तु हे राजन्, जो वीर थे, उन्होंने उस दुस्त्यज भय को भी त्यागकर योद्धाओं के व्रत का पालन किया और निर्भयतापूर्वक अपना कर्तव्य निभाया। जिस रणभूमि में अनगिनत बाण और शक्तियाँ आकाश में उड़ रही थीं, और जो अनेक प्रकार के मांसभक्षी प्राणियों से भरी हुई थी, उस भूमि पर वीर योद्धा निर्भय होकर अपना पराक्रम प्रकट करते हुए विचरण कर रहे थे। हे भारत, वे एक-दूसरे को सम्बोधित करके अपने नाम और कुल की घोषणा कर रहे थे। हे राजन्, उनमें से अनेक अपने पिता के नाम और अपने वंश का उद्घोष करते हुए एक-दूसरे को शक्तियों, भालों और परशुओं से चूर-चूर करने लगे। उस भीषण और भयंकर संग्राम के चलते कौरव-सेना उस जलमग्न नौका के समान शक्तिहीन और असमर्थ हो गई, जो महासागर की लहरों पर टिक न सके।
English Summary
And crows and 'vultures and cranes, gratified with fat and marrow and other animals relishing flesh, were seen to move about in glee. They, howev er, O king, that were heroes, casting off all fear which is so difficult of 'being cast off, and observing the vow of warriors, fearlessly did their duty. Indeed, on that field where count- less arrows and darts coursed through the air, and which was crowded with carnivorous creatures of diverse kinds, brave warriors careered fearlessly, displaying their prowess. Addressing one another, O Bharata, they declared their names and families. And many amongst them, declaring the names of their sires and families, O lord, began to crush one another, O king, with darts and lances and battle-axes. During the progress of that fierce and awful battle, the Kaurava army became strengthless and unable to bear up any longer like a foundered vessel on the bosom of the ocean."
