अर्जुन ने गाण्डीव धनुष खींचकर उनका सामना किया। संशप्तक वीर, पार्थ का वध करने की इच्छा से, विजय का दृढ़ संकल्प लेकर और मृत्यु को ही अपना लक्ष्य मानकर, उन पर टूट पड़े। मनुष्यों, अश्वों, मदमस्त हाथियों और रथों से भरी वह वीरों की विशाल सेना अर्जुन को अत्यन्त वेग से पीड़ित करने लगी। किरीटी अर्जुन के साथ उनका वह संग्राम अत्यन्त भीषण हो उठा। जैसा हमने सुना है, वह युद्ध अर्जुन और निवातकवचों के बीच हुए संग्राम के समान था। पार्थ ने बाणों, धनुषों, तलवारों, चक्रों, परशुओं, शस्त्र-सहित उठी हुई भुजाओं और शत्रुओं के मस्तकों को — सहस्रों की संख्या में — काट डाला; युद्ध में संलग्न रथों, अश्वों, ध्वजाओं, हाथियों और पैदल सैनिकों को भी छिन्न-भिन्न कर दिया। संशप्तकों ने पार्थ के रथ को योद्धाओं के गहरे भँवर में डूबा हुआ देखकर ऊँचे स्वर में गर्जना की। किन्तु पार्थ ने सामने के सभी शत्रुओं को मारकर, दूर खड़े शत्रुओं को, फिर दाहिनी ओर और पीठ की ओर के शत्रुओं को भी संहार किया — ठीक वैसे जैसे क्रुद्ध रुद्र समस्त प्राणियों का विनाश करते हैं। पाञ्चालों, चेदियों और शृञ्जयों का तुम्हारी सेना के साथ जो संग्राम हुआ, वह अत्यन्त घोर था। कृप, कृतवर्मा और सुबल-पुत्र शकुनि — ये तीनों युद्ध में दुर्जय वीर — प्रसन्नचित्त सैनिकों के साथ, स्वयं क्रोध से भरे हुए और शत्रु के रथ-समूहों को विदीर्ण करने में समर्थ होकर — कोशलों, काशियों, मत्स्यों, करूषों, कैकयों और सुरसेनों से युद्ध करने लगे, जो सभी महान साहस से सम्पन्न थे। वह महासंग्राम, जो शरीर, प्राण और पापों का नाश करने वाला था, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य और शूद्र वीरों के लिए यश, स्वर्ग और धर्म का साधन बन गया।

Partha, however, slaying all his foes in front, slew those that stood further off, and then those that were on his right and his back, like Rudra himself in rage slaughtering all created things endued with life. The encounter that took place between the Panchalas, the Chedis, and the Srinjayas, with thy troops, was exceedingly fierce. Kripa and Kritavarman, and Sakuni the son of Suvala, those heroes difficult of defeat in battle, accompanied by troops that were all cheerful, themselves filled with rage, and capable of smiting down thick ranks of cars, fought with the Koshalas, the Kasis, the Matsyas, the Karusas, the Kaikayas, and the Surasenas, all of whom were possessed of great courage. That battle fraught with great slaughter, and destructive of body, life and sins, became conducive to fame, heaven, and virtue, in respect of the Ksha- triya, the Vaisya, and the Sudra heroes that were engaged in It.
