हे राजन्, जनार्दन भूत और भविष्य दोनों को जानते हैं। इसीलिए उन्होंने अपने सारथी दारुक को बुलाकर आदेश दिया था — "कल के लिए मेरा रथ सुसज्जित रखा जाए।" यही उस महाबली का आदेश था। न देवता, न गन्धर्व, न यक्ष, न उरग, न राक्षस और न मनुष्य — कोई भी दोनों कृष्णों को जीतने में समर्थ नहीं है। पितामह ब्रह्मा सहित देवगण और सिद्धजन भी उन दोनों के अतुलनीय पराक्रम को जानते हैं। अब उस युद्ध का वृत्तान्त सुनिए जैसा वह हुआ। सात्यकि को कर्णरहित और कर्ण को युद्ध के लिए तत्पर देखकर माधव ने अपना महाघोष शङ्ख ऋषभ स्वर में फूँका। दारुक ने केशव के शङ्ख की ध्वनि सुनकर उसका अभिप्राय समझ लिया और शीघ्र ही स्वर्णध्वज से सुशोभित वह सुसज्जित रथ लेकर केशव के पास पहुँचा। केशव की अनुमति पाकर, दारुक द्वारा संचालित उस रथ पर — जो प्रज्वलित अग्नि अथवा सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी था — सिनि के पौत्र आरूढ़ हुए। वह रथ दिव्य विमान के समान था, उसमें सैब्य, सुग्रीव, मेघपुष्य और वलाहक — ये सर्वश्रेष्ठ अश्व जुते थे, जो इच्छानुसार सर्वत्र जा सकते थे और स्वर्णाभूषणों से अलंकृत थे। उस रथ पर आरूढ़ होकर सात्यकि ने अनगिनत बाण बरसाते हुए राधापुत्र पर आक्रमण किया। धनञ्जय के रथ के दोनों रक्षक — युधामन्यु और उत्तमौजस — अर्जुन का रथ छोड़कर राधापुत्र की ओर बढ़े। हे राजन्, राधापुत्र ने भी बाणों की वर्षा करते हुए क्रोधपूर्वक उस युद्ध में अजेय सिनिपौत्र पर धावा किया। उन दोनों के बीच जो युद्ध हुआ, उसके समान न पृथ्वी पर, न स्वर्ग में, न देवताओं के बीच, न गन्धर्वों के बीच, न असुरों के बीच, न उरगों के बीच और न राक्षसों के बीच — कभी कोई युद्ध हुआ था, ऐसा सुना भी नहीं गया था।

sravas). Janardana, O king, knoweth both the past and the future. For this, summoning his charioteer, Daruka, he had commanded him, saying, 'Let my car be kept equipped tomorrow.' Even this had been the command of that mighty one. Neither the gods, nor the Gandkarva*, nor the Yakshas, nor the Uragas, nor the Rakshasas, nor human beings, are capable of conquering the two Krishnas. The gods with the Grand- sire at their head, as also the Siddhas, know the incomparable prowess of those two. Listen, however, now to the battle as It happened. Beholding Satyaki earless and Kama ready for battle Madhava blew his conch of loud blare in the Rishabha note.1 Daruka, hearing the blare of (Kesava's) conch, understood the meaning, and soon took that car, equipped with a lofty standard of gold, to where Kesava was. With Kesava's permission, upon that car guided by Daruka, and which resembled the blazing fire or the sun in effulgence, ascended the grand- son of Sini. Ascending upon the car which resembled a celestial vehicle and unto which were yoked those foremost of steeds, capable of going everywhere at will, viz., Saivya and Sugriva and Meghapushya and Valahaka, and which were adorned with trappings of gold, Satyaki rushed against the son of Radha, scattering countless shafts. The two protectors of (Arjuna's) car-wheels, viz., Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas, abandoning Dhananjaya's car, proceeded against the son of Radha. Radha's son also, O king, shooting showers of shafts, angrily rushed, in that battle, against the invincible grandson of Sini. The, battle that took place between them was such that its like had never been heard to have taken place on earth or in heaven between gods, Gandharvas, Asuras, Uragas, or Raksliasas.
