काण्व ने कहा — हे भारत, इसी बीच महाबली गरुड़ को यह समाचार मिला कि शक्र ने नाग सुमुख को दीर्घायु का वरदान दे दिया है। यह सुनकर वह आकाश-विचारी सुपर्ण महाक्रोध से भर उठा। अपने पंखों के वेग से तीनों लोकों को झकझोरता हुआ वह शीघ्र ही वासव के पास आया। गरुड़ ने कहा — हे तेजस्वी देव, मुझे तुच्छ समझकर तुमने मेरे आहार में हस्तक्षेप क्यों किया? तुमने स्वयं अपनी इच्छा से मुझे वरदान दिया था, तो अब उसे वापस क्यों ले रहे हो? सभी प्राणियों के परम ईश्वर ने सृष्टि के आरम्भ से ही मेरा भोजन निर्धारित किया है। फिर तुम उस दैवी विधान के मार्ग में क्यों खड़े हो? मैंने इस महानाग को चुना था और समय भी निश्चित किया था, क्योंकि हे देव, मेरी इच्छा थी कि इसके मांस से अपनी असंख्य सन्तान का पोषण करूँ। अब जब इसने तुमसे वरदान पाकर मेरे लिए अवध्य हो गया है, तो मैं आगे इसकी जाति के किसी अन्य नाग को मारने का साहस कैसे कर सकता हूँ?
English Summary
"Kanwa said, — 'Meanwhile, O Bharata, the mighty Gadura heard what had happened, viz., the bestowal by Sakra of length of days on the Naga Sumukha. And inflamed with great anger, that ranger of the firmament, Suparna, smiting the three worlds by the hurricane caused by the flappings of his wings, quickly came to Vasava. And Gadura said, — 'O illustrious one, disregarding me why hast thou interfered with my sustenance. Having granted me a boon of thy own will, why dost thou now withdraw It ? The Supreme Lord of all creatures hath, from the beginning, ordained what my food is to be. Why dost thou then stand in the way of that divine decree ? I had selected this great Naga and had fixed time, for O god, I had intended to offer the meat of his body, as sustenance to my numerous progeny.
