हाथियों, रथों और घोड़ों पर सवार कौरव सेना के सभी योद्धा, सुवर्ण रथ पर विराजने वाले द्रोणाचार्य को मारा गया देखकर, रणभूमि से भाग खड़े हुए। कोई अपने पिता को आगे बढ़ाते हुए, कोई अपने भाइयों को, कोई अपने मामाओं को, कोई अपने पुत्रों को, कोई अपने मित्रों को — इस प्रकार कौरव सब दिशाओं में भाग गए। कुछ अन्य अपने सहयोद्धाओं को, अपने भाँजों को और अपने कुटुम्बियों को आगे करते हुए चारों ओर से पलायन कर गए। बाल बिखरे हुए, कवच और आयुध ढीले पड़े हुए — सब इस प्रकार भागे कि दो व्यक्ति भी एक साथ दिखाई नहीं पड़ते थे। "कुरु सेना पूरी तरह नष्ट हो गई" — यही सबका विश्वास हो गया था। हे राजन्, आपकी सेना के अनेक सैनिक अपने कवच उतार फेंककर भाग गए। हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, सैनिक एक-दूसरे को ऊँचे स्वर में पुकारते थे — "रुको, रुको, मत भागो" — परन्तु जो ऐसा कहते थे, वे स्वयं भी रणभूमि पर नहीं ठहरे। अलंकृत वाहनों और रथों को छोड़कर, योद्धा घोड़ों पर सवार होकर अथवा पैदल ही, अत्यन्त वेग से भाग निकले।
English Summary
Biding on elephants and cars and steeds, all the warriors of the Kaurava army fled away from the field, seeing Drona, of golden car, slain. Some urging their sires on, some their brothers, some their maternal uncles, some their sons, some their friends, the Kauravas fled away. Others urging on their brethren in arms or, their sisters' sons, their kinsmen, fled away on all sides. With dishevelled hair, and accoutrements loosened, all fled away in such a manner that even two persons could not be seen run- ning together. — The Kuru army has been totally destroyed, — even this was the belief of every body. Others amongst thy troops, fled away, 0 king, throwing off their coats of mail. The soldiers loudly called upon one another, 0 bull of Bharata's race, saying, — 'Wait, Wait, do not fly, but none of them that said so themselves stood on the field. Abandoning their vehicles and cars decked with ornaments, the warriors, riding on steeds or using their legs, fled away with great speed.
