भरद्वाज-पुत्र का पतन देखकर — जो मानो सूर्य का पृथ्वी पर गिरना हो, या समुद्र का सूख जाना हो, या मेरु का उखड़ जाना हो, या वासव की पराजय हो — वह दृश्य जो सहन करना असम्भव था, उसे देखकर कौरव भय से व्याकुल होकर भाग खड़े हुए, और भय ने उनकी गति और भी तीव्र कर दी। हे राजन्, गान्धार-नरेश शकुनि ने सुवर्ण-रथ पर आरूढ़ द्रोण को मृत देखकर अपने रथी-दल सहित अत्यन्त वेग से पलायन किया। सूत-पुत्र भी भय से आक्रान्त होकर अपनी विशाल सेना को लेकर भाग गया, जो अपने समस्त ध्वजों सहित तीव्र गति से पीछे हट रही थी। मद्र-नरेश शल्य भी चारों ओर शून्य दृष्टि डालते हुए, रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों से भरी अपनी सेना को साथ लेकर भयभीत होकर भाग गए। शरद्वान के पुत्र कृप भी "हाय, हाय" कहते हुए अपने हाथी-दल और पैदल सेना को — जिसका अधिकांश भाग मारा जा चुका था — लेकर भाग गए। हे राजन्, कृतवर्मा भी अपने तीव्रगामी अश्वों पर सवार होकर, भोज, कलिंग, आरट्ट और वाह्लीक सेनाओं के अवशेष से घिरे हुए, भाग निकले। हे राजन्, उलूक ने द्रोण को मृत देखकर भय से पीड़ित होकर बड़ी संख्या में पैदल सैनिकों के साथ तीव्र गति से पलायन किया। सुन्दर, युवा और अपनी वीरता के लिए विख्यात दुःशासन भी अत्यन्त व्याकुलता में अपने हाथी-दल से घिरा हुआ भाग गया। वृषसेन भी दस सहस्र रथ और तीन सहस्र हाथी लेकर, द्रोण का पतन देखते ही तीव्र वेग से भाग गया। हे राजन्, महारथी तुम्हारे पुत्र दुर्योधन ने भी अपने हाथियों, घोड़ों, रथों और पैदल सैनिकों के साथ, तथा संशप्तकों के उन अवशेषों को लेकर जिन्हें अर्जुन ने अभी तक नहीं मारा था, पलायन किया। हे राजन्, सुशर्मा भी द्रोण को मृत देखकर भाग गया।

Beholding the fall of Bharadwaja's son, which was like unto the dropping of the sun down upon the earth, or the drying up of the ocean, or the transplantation of Meru, or the defeat of Vasava, behold- ing that act, incapable of being quietly witnessed, the Kauravas, 0 king, fled away in fear, — terror lending them greater speed. The ruler of the Gandharas Sakuni, baholding Drona of the golden car slain, fled with the car-warriors of his division, with speed that was much greater. Even the Sutas son fled away in fear, taking with him his own vast division, that was retreating with great speed with all its standards. The ruler of the Madras, viz., Salya, also, casting vacant looks around, fled away in fear, taking with him his division, teeming with cars and elephants and steeds. Saradwat's son, Kripa, too, fled away, saying, 'Alas, Alas,' taking with him his division of elephants and foot-soldiers, the greater part thereof having been slain. Krifcavarman, 0 king, also fled away, borne by his swift steeds, and surroundei by the remnant of his Bhoja, Kalinga, Aratta, and Valhika troops. Uluka, 0 king, beholding Drona slain, fled away with speed, afflicted with fear and accompanied by a large body of foot-soldiers. Handsome and endued with youth, and reputed for his bravery, Duhsasana, also, in great anxiety, fled away surrounded by his elephant division. Taking with him ten thousand cars and three thousand elephants, Vrishasena also fled with speed at the sight of Drona's fall. Accompanied by his elephants and horses and cars, and surrounded also by foot-soldiers, thy son, the mighty car-warrior, Duryodhana, too, fled away, 0 king, taking with him the remnant of the Samsaptaltas whom Arjuna had not yet slaughtered. Susarman, O king, fled away, beholding Drona slain.
