वैशम्पायन ने कहा — (आगे) पाण्डु के पुत्रों ने, श्रृञ्जयों के साथ मिलकर, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों का वध करने का जो संकल्प किया है, उसके पीछे उन्हें कौन-सी हानि पहुँची है? हम किसी के भीषण कर्म से अथवा भयावह वचन से भयभीत होकर, विवेक खोकर, उनके सामने नहीं झुकेंगे। हम स्वयं इन्द्र के सामने भी नहीं झुक सकते, तो पाण्डु के पुत्रों की तो बात ही क्या। हे कृष्ण, मुझे कोई ऐसा पुरुष दिखाई नहीं देता जो क्षत्रिय धर्म का पालन करता हो और जो हे शत्रुहन्ता, युद्ध में हमें जीतने का साहस कर सके। हे मधुसूदन, पाण्डवों की तो बात छोड़िए, स्वयं देवता भी भीष्म, कृप, द्रोण और कर्ण को युद्ध में परास्त करने में समर्थ नहीं हैं। हे माधव, यदि हम अपने वर्ण के आचरण का पालन करते हुए, जब हमारा अन्त आए, युद्ध में शस्त्रों से कट जाएँ, तो वह भी हमें स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति कराएगा। हे जनार्दन, यही हमारा क्षत्रियों का सर्वोच्च धर्म है कि हम युद्धभूमि में बाणों की शय्या पर शयन करें। यदि शत्रुओं के सामने न झुकते हुए युद्ध में बाणों की शय्या हमारी हो, तो हे माधव, इसका हमें कभी खेद नहीं होगा। भला कौन ऐसा पुरुष है जो उत्तम कुल में उत्पन्न हुआ हो, क्षत्रिय आचरण का पालन करता हो, और केवल प्राण-रक्षा की इच्छा से भय के कारण शत्रु के सामने झुक जाए? जो क्षत्रिय अपना कल्याण चाहते हैं, वे मतङ्ग के इस वचन को आदरपूर्वक स्वीकार करते हैं कि क्षत्रिय को सदा।
English Summary
Vaisampayana said, — (continued) For what injury (done to them) do the sons of Pandu, along with the Srinjayas, seek to slaughter the sons of Dhritarashtra ? We s'oall not in consequence of any fierce deed, or (alarming) word (of theirs), bow down to them in fear, deprived of our senses. We cannot bow down to Indra himself* let alone the sons of Pandu. I do not, O Krishna, see the man, observant of Kshatriya virtues, who can, O slayer of foes, venture to conquer us in battle. Let alone the Padavas, O slayer of Madhu, the very gods are not com- petent to vanquish Bhishma, Kripa, Drona and Kama, in battle- If, O Madhava, we are, in the observance of the practices of our order, cut off with weapons in battle, when our end comes, even that will lead us to heaven. Even this, O Janarddana, is our highest duty as Kshatriyas, viz., that we should lay ourselves down on the field of battle on a bed of arrows. If, without bowing to our enemks, ours be the bed of arrows in battle, that, O Madhava, will never grieve us. Who is there, born in a noble race and conforming to Kshatriya practices, that would from fear bow to an enemy, desirous only of saving his life ? Those Kshatriyas that desire their own good, accept regardfully this saying of Matanga, viz , that (as regards a Kshatriya), one should always keep
