सञ्जय ने कहा — हे राजन्, अब उन सब अनुचित कार्यों का स्मरण करो जो तुमने किए थे — जैसे पासे का वह कुख्यात खेल और उस जैसे अन्य कार्य — जो अब मनुष्य के चिन्तन के विषय से परे हो चुके हैं। किन्तु बीते हुए कार्यों पर बार-बार विचार नहीं करना चाहिए। ऐसे विचार से मनुष्य का पतन हो सकता है। जो फल तुम चाहते थे, वह अब सफलता से बहुत दूर हो गया है, क्योंकि ज्ञानवान होते हुए भी तुमने उस समय अपने कार्यों के उचित और अनुचित पक्ष पर विचार नहीं किया। हे राजन्, तुम्हें अनेक बार पाण्डवों से युद्ध न करने की सलाह दी गई थी। किन्तु हे नरेश, तुमने मूढ़ता के कारण उन परामर्शों को स्वीकार नहीं किया। तुमने पाण्डु-पुत्रों के विरुद्ध अनेक प्रकार के गम्भीर पापकर्म किए। उन्हीं कर्मों के फलस्वरूप अब राजाओं का यह भयंकर संहार हुआ है। किन्तु वह सब अब बीत चुका है। हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठ, शोक मत करो। हे अक्षय यशस्वी, अब इस भयावह युद्ध में जो विनाश हुआ है, उसका विवरण सुनो।
English Summary
Sanjaya said, "O king, think now of all those wrongful acts of thine like that match at dice and the others — acts that have passed away from the subjects of thought with man. One should not, how- ever, reflect on byegone acts. One may be ruined by such reflection. That result (which thou hadst expected) is now much removed from the point of fruition, since, although possessed of knowledge, thou didst not reflect on the propriety or impropriety of thy acts then. Many a time wert thou, O king, counselled against warring with the Pandavas. Thou didst not, however, O monarch, accept those counsels, from folly. Diverse sinful acts of a grave nature were perpetrated by thee against the sons of Pandu. For those acts this awful slaughter of kings hath now come. All that, however, is now past. Do not grieve, O bull of Bharata's race. O thou of unfading glory, listen now to the details of the awful carnage that has occurred. 1 A triplet.— T. 76 MAHABHABATA
