काण्व ने कहा — उस पक्षी के गर्वपूर्ण वचन सुनकर, जो आने वाले संकट की सूचना दे रहे थे, चक्रधारी श्रीविष्णु ने तार्क्ष्य को और अधिक उत्तेजित करते हुए कहा — हे गरुड़, इतने दुर्बल होते हुए भी तुम अपने आप को बलवान क्यों समझते हो? हे अण्डज, हमारे सामने इस प्रकार डींग हाँकना तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देता। तीनों लोक मिलकर भी मेरे शरीर का भार नहीं सह सकते। मैं स्वयं अपना भार वहन करता हूँ और तुम्हारा भी। अब आओ, मेरी इस एक दाहिनी भुजा का भार सहो। यदि तुम इतना भी सह सको, तो तुम्हारा यह अभिमान उचित माना जाएगा। यह कहकर उस पवित्र देव ने अपनी भुजा गरुड़ के कंधों पर रख दी। उसी क्षण गरुड़ उस भार से पीड़ित होकर, मूढ़ और चेतनाशून्य होकर नीचे गिर पड़ा। गरुड़ को अनुभव हुआ कि विष्णु की उस एक भुजा का भार समस्त पर्वतों सहित सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी के भार के समान है। असीमित बल से सम्पन्न होने पर भी विष्णु ने उसे अधिक पीड़ित नहीं किया। वास्तव में, अच्युत ने उसके प्राण नहीं लिए। उस असीम भार से पीड़ित होकर वह आकाश-विचारी गरुड़ हाँफने लगा और अपने पंख झाड़ने लगा। उसके सभी अंग शिथिल हो गए और वह पूर्णतः भ्रमित होकर लगभग चेतनाशून्य हो गया। विनता के उस पक्षी-पुत्र ने, जो इस प्रकार भ्रमित और चेतनाहीन होकर सर्वथा असहाय हो गया था, विष्णु के समक्ष नतमस्तक होकर दुर्बल स्वर में यह वचन कहे — "हे प्रभो, इस समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड को धारण करने वाली शक्ति का सार आपके इस शरीर में निवास करता है। तो फिर इसमें क्या आश्चर्य कि आपकी एक भुजा के विस्तार मात्र से मैं भूमि पर दब जाऊँ। हे दिव्य प्रभो, आपके ध्वज पर बैठने वाले इस पक्षी को, जो बल के मद में अंधा होकर अब सर्वथा असहाय हो गया है, क्षमा करना आपको उचित है। हे प्रभो, आपकी महान शक्ति का मुझे पहले कोई ज्ञान नहीं था, इसी कारण मैं अपने बल को अतुलनीय समझता रहा।" इस प्रकार सम्बोधित होने पर भगवान विष्णु प्रसन्न हुए और गरुड़ को स्नेहपूर्वक सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा — "आगे से ऐसा आचरण मत करना।" यह कहकर उपेन्द्र ने सुमुख को अपने पैर के अँगूठे से उठाकर गरुड़ के वक्षस्थल पर रख दिया। हे राजन्, उसी समय से गरुड़ उस सर्प के साथ मित्रभाव से रहने लगा। इस प्रकार, हे राजन्, विनता के महाबली और तेजस्वी पुत्र गरुड़ का, विष्णु के पराक्रम से पीड़ित होकर, अहंकार दूर हो गया।

"Kanwa continued, — 'Hearing the proud words of that bird foreshadowing danger, the bearer of the discus, provoking Tarkshya still more, said unto him, — Though so very weak, why dost thou, O Gadura, yet regard thyself strong. O oviparous creature, It ill behoveth thee to vaunt thus in our presence. The three worlds united together cannot bear the weight of my body. I myself bear my own weight and thine also. Come now, bear thou the weight of this one right arm of mine. If thou canst bear even this, thy boast would be regarded as reasonable. Saying this, the holy one placed his arms on Gadura's shoulders. Thereupon the latter fell down, afflicted with its weight, confounded, and deprived of his senses. And Gadura, felt that the weight of that one arm of Vishnu was as great as that of the entire Earth with her mountains. Endued fwith might infinitely greater, Vishnu, however, did not afflict him much. Indeed, Achyuta did not take his life. That ranger of the sky, afflicted then by .that immense weight, gasped for breath, and began to cast off his feathers. With every limb weakened, and utterly confounded, Gadura was almost deprived of his senses. The winged offspring of Vinata then, thus confounded and almost deprived of bis senses, and rendered utterly helpless, bowing unto Vishnu with bent head, feebly addressed him, saying, — 'O illustrious Lord, the essence of that strength which sustains the universe dwelleth in this body of thine. What wonder, therefore, that I should be crushed down to the earth by a single arm of thine, stretched out at thy pleasure. It behoveth thee, O divine Lord, to forgive this winged creature that perches on thy flagstaff— this fool intoxicated with pride of strength, but now rendered utterly helpless. Thy great strength, O divine Lord, was never known to me before. It was for this that I regarded my own might to be unequalled.— Thus addressed, the illustrious Vishnu became gratified, and addressing Gadura with affection, said, — Let not thy behaviour be such again.' — And saying this, Upendra threw Sumukha with the toe of his foot upon Gadura's breast. And from that time, O king, Gadura hath ever lived in friend- ship with that snake. It was thus, O king, that the mighty and illustri- ous Gadura, the son of Vinata, afflicted by the might of Vishuu, was cured of his pride. "
