हे उद्धव! जब सत्त्वगुण की प्रधानता होती है, तब देवता बलवान होते हैं। जब रजोगुण बढ़ता है, तब असुर अत्यन्त शक्तिशाली हो जाते हैं। और जब तमोगुण का भाग बढ़ता है, तब राक्षस और दानव अपार शक्ति प्राप्त कर लेते हैं। यह जान लो कि समस्त प्राणियों में सत्त्वगुण जागृति उत्पन्न करता है। रजोगुण स्वप्न की अवस्था लाता है। और तमोगुण सभी प्राणियों पर गहरी निद्रा का आवरण डाल देता है। किन्तु इन तीनों से परे जो चौथी अवस्था है — तुरीय — वह आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान की स्थिति है, जो इन तीनों से श्रेष्ठ है और इन सबको अपने में समेट लेती है। सत्त्वगुण के द्वारा मनुष्य ब्रह्मलोक की ओर ऊर्ध्वगति करते हैं और क्रमशः परमात्मा के धाम को प्राप्त होते हैं। परन्तु जिनमें तमोगुण की प्रधानता है, उनकी अधोगति होती है और वे स्थावर योनियों तक पहुँच जाते हैं। रजोगुण के द्वारा मनुष्य मनुष्यलोक को प्राप्त होते हैं। जो व्यक्ति मृत्यु के समय सत्त्वगुण की उच्चतम अवस्था में होते हैं, वे स्वर्ग को प्राप्त होते हैं। जो रजोगुण की प्रधानता में मृत्यु को प्राप्त होते हैं, वे मनुष्यलोक में जाते हैं। और जो तमोगुण में मरते हैं, वे नरक को जाते हैं। किन्तु जो इन तीनों गुणों से ऊपर उठ जाते हैं, वे निश्चय ही मुझे प्राप्त होते हैं। जो भी कर्म मुझे प्रसन्न करने के उद्देश्य से किये जाते हैं, अथवा मेरे सेवक के भाव से किये जाते हैं, वे सभी सात्त्विक कर्म कहलाते हैं।
English Summary
O Uddhava! when the quality of goodness prevails, it is then that the celestials become powerful. When energy increases, the Asuras become very strong. At last, with the increase of the portion of darkness, the Rakshasas or the Demons grow immensely in power. Do thou know that in respect to all creatures, the quality of goodness brings on wakefulness. The quality of energy brings on dreams. Similarly the quality of darkness diffuse sleep over all creatures. But the fourth stage, namely, the condition of spiritual knowledge (Turiya) is superior to these three and covers them wholly. By means of the quality of goodness persons soar high up towards Brahmaloka and gradually arrives at the region of the Supreme Spirit. But men with the pre- dominancy of darkness in themselves, have a downward course and descends even to the immobile existence, Again through energy, men attain to the region of human inhabitation. Those persons who possess the highest amount of the quality of goodness at the time of their death are said to attain to heaven. But those persons who die at the time of the preponderance of energy in them go to the region of humanity. So the persons who die with darkness in them go to hell. Moreover, the persons who are above the three chief atstibutes of creation, surely obtain me. All actions that are performed with a view to propitiating me, or simply done as if by my servants, are denominated as sattwaic i.e., good and virtuous.
