उसकी धनुष की प्रत्यञ्चा दिव्य है और उसके दोनों विशाल तरकश अक्षय हैं। उसका सारथि गोविन्द है — मेरे पास उसके समान कोई नहीं है। उसके पास वह दिव्य और श्रेष्ठतम धनुष है जिसे गाण्डीव कहते हैं, जो युद्ध में अभेद्य है। मेरे पास भी वह उत्तम, दिव्य और भयंकर धनुष है जिसे विजय कहते हैं। धनुषों की दृष्टि से, हे राजन्, मैं अर्जुन से श्रेष्ठ हूँ। अब उन विषयों को सुनिए जिनमें पाण्डु का वह वीर पुत्र मुझसे श्रेष्ठ है। उसके अश्वों की लगाम थामने वाले दाशार्ह-कुल के वे महापुरुष हैं जिन्हें समस्त लोक पूजते हैं। अग्नि द्वारा प्रदत्त उसका वह दिव्य रथ सुवर्ण से विभूषित है और सब ओर से अभेद्य है। हे वीर, उसके अश्व भी मन की गति से चलते हैं। उसकी दिव्य ध्वजा पर प्रज्वलित वानर का चिह्न अत्यन्त अद्भुत है। और जो समस्त सृष्टि के रचयिता हैं, वे कृष्ण उस रथ की रक्षा करते हैं। इन सब बातों में अर्जुन से हीन होते हुए भी मेरी उससे युद्ध करने की अभिलाषा है। किन्तु यह शल्य, जो सभाओं का भूषण है, शौरि के समतुल्य है। यदि वे मेरे सारथि बनें तो विजय निश्चित रूप से तुम्हारी होगी। अतः जो शत्रुओं द्वारा अप्रतिरोध्य हैं, वे शल्य मेरे रथ के सारथि बनें। मेरे दीर्घ बाण और गृध्र-पंखों से युक्त शर अनेक गाड़ियों पर लादकर चलें। हे नरेश, उत्तम अश्वों से युक्त अनेक श्रेष्ठ रथ सदा मेरे पीछे चलें, हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठ। इन व्यवस्थाओं से मैं उन गुणों की दृष्टि से अर्जुन से श्रेष्ठ हो जाऊँगा। शल्य कृष्ण से श्रेष्ठ हैं और मैं अर्जुन से श्रेष्ठ हूँ। जिस प्रकार शत्रुहन्ता दाशार्ह-कुलज अश्व-विद्या में निपुण हैं, उसी प्रकार वह महारथी शल्य भी अश्व-विद्या में पारंगत हैं।
English Summary
string of his bow is celestial, and the two large quivers of his are inexhaustible. His driver is Govinda. I have none like him. His is that celestial and foremost of bows, called Qandiva, which is irrefragi- ble in battle. I also have that excellent, celestial, and formidable bow called Vijaya. In respect ot our bows, therefore, O king, I am superior to Arjuna. Listen now to those matters in which the heoric son of Pandu is superior to me. The holder of the reins ( of his steeds ) is he of Dasarha's race who is adored by all the worlds. His celestial car decked with gold, given unto him* by Agni, is impenetrable in every part, and his steeds also, O hero, are endued with the speed of the mind. His celestial standard, bearing the blazing Ape, is exceedingly wonderful. Again, Krishna, who is Creator of the universe, protects that car. Though inferior to Arjuna in respect of these things, I still desire to fight with him. This Salya, however, the ornament of assem- blies, is equal to Saurin. If he becomes my driver, victory will certainly be thine. Let Salya, therefore, who is incapable of being resisted by foes be the driver of my car. Let a large number of carts bear my long shafts and those that are winged with vulturine feathers. Let a number of foremost cars, O monarch, with excellent steeds yoked unto them, always follow me, O bull of Bharata's race. By these arrangements I will, as regards the qualities mentioned, be superior to Arjuna. Salya is superior to Krishna, and I am superior to Arjuna. As that slayer of foes, v»z., he of Dasarha's race, is acquainted with horselore, even so is that mighty car-warrior, viz., Salya acquainted with horselore.
