युधिष्ठिर ने कहा — आओ, आओ, हे पार्थ, हे विभत्सु, हे पाण्डुपुत्र, मुझे आलिंगन दो। तुमने जो हितकर वचन कहने योग्य थे, वे कहे — मैंने तुम्हें क्षमा किया। हे धनञ्जय, मैं तुम्हें आज्ञा देता हूँ — जाओ और कर्ण का वध करो। हे पार्थ, मैंने जो कठोर वचन तुमसे कहे, उनके लिए क्रोध मत करो। सञ्जय ने कहा — तब, हे राजन्, धनञ्जय ने अपना मस्तक झुकाकर युधिष्ठिर को प्रणाम किया और अपने दोनों हाथों से अपने ज्येष्ठ भ्राता के चरण पकड़ लिए। राजा ने उन्हें उठाकर हृदय से लगाया और उनके मस्तक को सूँघकर पुनः ये वचन कहे — हे धनञ्जय, हे महाबाहु, तुमने मुझे बड़ा सम्मान दिया है। तुम सदा महत्त्व और विजय प्राप्त करो। अर्जुन ने कहा — आज मैं अपने बल पर गर्व करने वाले राधापुत्र के समक्ष जाकर उस पापकर्मी को उसके सभी सम्बन्धियों और अनुयायियों सहित युद्ध में अपने बाणों से मार डालूँगा। जिस कर्ण ने धनुष को दृढ़ता से खींचकर तुम्हें अपने बाणों से पीड़ित किया था, वह आज उस कर्म का कटु फल भोगेगा — यह मेरा वचन है। हे पृथ्वीपते, कर्ण का वध करके आज मैं उस भीषण संग्राम से लौटकर तुम्हारे पीछे चलते हुए तुम्हें प्रणाम करूँगा। यह मैं तुमसे सत्य कहता हूँ। कर्ण का वध किए बिना मैं आज इस महासंग्राम से नहीं लौटूँगा। हे जगत्पते, तुम्हारे चरणों का स्पर्श करके मैं यह सत्य प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ।
English Summary
"Yudhishthira said, 'Come, Come, O Partha, O Vibhatsu, and embrace me, O son of Pandu. Thou hast told me beneficial words that deserved to be said, and I have forgiven thee. I command thee, O Dhananjaya, — go and slay Kama. Do not, O Partha, be angry for the harsh words I said unto thee.' " Sanjaya continued, "Then Dhananjaya, O king, bowed unto Yudhishthira by bending his head, and seized with his two hands, O sire, the feet of his eldest brother. Raising him and embracing him closely, the king smelt his head and once more said these words unto him, 'O Dhananjaya, O thou of mighty arms, I have been greatly honoured by thee. Do thou ever win greatness and victory.' " "Arjuna said, 'Approaching Radha's son today that is proud of his might, I shall slay that man of sinful deeds with my shafts in battle, 206 MAHABHAEATA along with all his kinsmen and followers. He who, having bent the bow strongly, afflicted thee with his shafts, I say, that Kama, will obtain today the bitter fruit of that act of his. Having slain Kama, O lord of the earth, I shall today come back from the dreadful battle to pay thee my respects by walking behind thee. I tell thee this truly. Without hav ing slain Kama I shall not come back today from the great battle. Truly do I swear this by touching thy feet, O lord of the uni- verse.' "
